Moved here in 2010 and haven't met a "fanatic" yet. I spent almost 5 years investigating the area before moving and never met one in that time either.

With all due respect, that could be applied to you as well, as some of your posts have been controversial as well.

So sharing my views and experiences while living here is controversial? I guess it might appear that way when it doesn't align with the views of some on here.

I'm irreligious in Tennessee and here's my take. First off, Tennessee is no more uniform than any other state. People self-segregate by race, religion, income, and all the rest just like in the other 49 states. So, it depends where you are exactly. I don't know anything about small town/rural life (they have their own board if you want to talk to them), but here's how it works in cities. Yes, we have a lot of self-identified religious people. So does every state. But, like money and politics, it's not something that most people advertise outright in real life. You have to go to anonymous online discussion boards if you want to discuss anything controversial because nobody wants to have a big kerfuffle face to face and get labelled as the extremist (religious, political, vegetarian, whatever) at work or in the neighborhood. 10 years ago, you used to see a lot of magnetic fish on the backsides of cars, but even those have gone out of style along with bumper stickers. Americans today are VERY avoidant with strangers and even with casual acquaintances. While conversations about sex and body functions are much more ok than they used to be, I wouldn't dream of discussing religion or politics with my neighbors. Only personal finances are more taboo. Maybe among close friends and family, we have these conversations, but it's not worth the hassle to go out and evangelize. Many Christians try to lead by example in hopes that others will notice. Outside of a stray Jehovah's Witness, nobody is going to come knocking on your door. Learn to roll your eyes at the politicians who use religion to justify whatever they want and you should be fine.

Mind you, I have only lived in Knoxville since 1994, so I may be behind the curve a bit.
They would show up to UTK every now and then. Also downtown.

Also, there are probably as many religious "fanatics" here than anywhere else in the country. I'm from the northeast, lived in Florida, and now Knoxville. Fanatics of any persuasion are everywhere. However, we do have a lot of churches here and I suspect a large amount of people regularly attend church, perhaps more than where you are from. If that is considered fanaticism, then so be it.

I've lived here nine years and not once has anyone asked if I were saved or even invited me to church. When I lived in a very rural area of Knox County we had people that came to the door and sang Christmas carols, then gave my daughter a beautiful sterling ornament. If that is fanaticism, then so be it.

I've attended church here on a regular basis, then didn't, even been an atheist for quite some time. No one cares.

Bear in mind that this is a public forum and you'll get all kinds of answers from all types* of people, even those that put their two-cents in when they've never lived here.

*Some may be completely off the beam.
I lived there and had more than a few people ask "what church you go to", along with the group prayers at work. Been invited a few times, always seem to be cashiers or servers that do this.

TN is a lot of things, but being upfront rude to your face is not one of them. That is not how they generally operate. I find this story hard to believe. If it is true, then the person just had mental issues not related to religion or anything else.

Why in the heck are you moving here?

It is not difficult to find a low wage job, like at Walmart or something. Low cost of living helps also.
