My husband and I are considering a move to the Knoxville arae. We are both county employees here in NC, so we are in the state retirement. I have 9 yeas vested and he has 6 years. My question is, if we move to TN, will TN take our NC State retirement and roll into their's (if we get hired with local government), or will I be like a new employee and have to start the whole vested after 5 years again? Thanks in advance!

That question would best be answered by contacting the state agency in charge of state retirements.

I don't know the answer, but if I was to guess, I would say that unless both States had the same retirement system, then the answer would be no.

Unlikely, but you would be better off contacting your current employer and TN Consolidated Retirement System for further info.

My brother was a NC state employee and was considering moving to Tennessee to take a similar job with the state of TN. In his case, his state retirement would not transfer, so he stayed in NC.

Thanks JMT. That is what I was told also. Bummer, I really love the Knoxville area. I guess I will wait until retirement.
