Hello All,

I just joined the City-Data forums. Lots of great info from lots of great people here.

I live in NYC and it is my goal to leave it behind in a few years. I've been looking at Tennessee as my state of choice and after some research I'm gravitating towards Knoxville. Currently still in the research phase. Will do my best to check questions that have already been posed before posting any of my own.

And one day in the future I hope to be able to post information from Knoxville myself for those wishing to leave New York.

I'm planning to relocate to Knoxville also, from NE FL, though I am from Nashville, 20 yrs ago. Can hardly wait to live near the mountains and snow again! Not long a City-Data member also, though I've been using the site for years. The forums are really extensive, with very high participation. I love coming here.

One thing that I like about Knoxville is that it is not hit heavily with natural disasters.

Good luck in your research. Craigslist is good for research too, if you know how to pick your way through the spam/scams. Some of the communities and groups provide good info and local color.

See you around.

A member was kind enough to send me a msg about snow in Knoxville, based on my comment. Here is part of what was shared:

The average annual snowfall in Knoxville has actually declined over the last thirty years, thirty year periods being when stats are adjusted. the average here now is 6.5 inches per year as opposed to the former thirty years average of 9.5.

This is my reply:

Thanks so much! I know. Snowfall has declined everywhere, and is no where near what it used to be when I was growing up in Middle TN, and before that when my parents/aunts/uncles were. Even Atlanta had huge snowfalls in the 30-40s, as seen in pics in books in the library, lol.

Knoxville is closer to the mountains, where snowfall is greater, and closer to Ashevillle, NC, etc., where I can visit easier if I want more.

Thanks LadyFisher. In terms of snow all I have for perspective is what falls here in nyc. This season it hasn't been too bad. Just had to brush snow off the car a couple of times. Less snow would definitely be better so that is another thing I can look forward to once I leave this place behind.

The problem is perspective. A Southerner really can't adequately convey weather conditions to a Northerner and vice versa.

The most snow ever recorded on a single day in Atlanta was on January 23, 1940 when 8.3 inches fell. In the Northeast, seasonal snow can be anywhere from 50 to 110 inches.
