Making a side trip to McKays used bookstore in Knoxville soon. Has anyone taken advantage of their trade in policy? If so, is it worth it to use up valuable trunk space with used books and CD’s to trade in? If they only give pennies on the dollar I won’t bother trading anything in. Thank You

I have never traded in there but did at a similar store locally. While it wasn’t quite “pennies on the dollar,” it wasn’t much more and I’d only do it for items you’d otherwise dump off. They’re a terrific store and you can find new inventory on basically every trip. I always make a point to go there when I’m in town.

I have a lot of experience with McKay's.
Its very odd and sometimes confusing on what they reject, and what they take. It has to do with how many they may have of that particular item, and how popular it is.
They also don't want anything that shows wear or is marked up.

You take your stuff in and use their bins. They give you a number to know when to come back and get your money, etc. It takes anywhere from a few minutes to maybe 40 minutes (longest I have ever had to wait).
Then they will tell you what they will give you in cash, or trade. They also will return any things they did not want. OR you can just have them dump them in the free bin in front of the store.

The amount of cash you get is likely closer to pennies on the dollar. You are not going to go in there with a fairly new $18 book and get $10. You will likely get a little below what the same book is selling for on EBay or Amazon Used books. Books just don't sell for a lot usually.

They will also give you an option to take the money in store credit. It is always much higher than the cash amount.

I always take the store credit, because I buy a lot of books there.

You can also donate books to your local library and get a tax deduction. They will take almost everything.

If you are looking to make money on your books, your best bet is to try to sell them on EBay or Amazon, but them you have to pay a commission and mess with the shipping. I used to buy and sell a lot of books on EBay, but found that they just do not sell like they used to. Most people want ebooks.

Hope this helps.

One thing about McKay's is that if you are a frequent patron it makes much more sense to take the store credit like Barking Spider said.

I collect video game memorabilia. McKay's has a section specific to that for what I'm interested in. Whenever I stop in, they'll usually have a player's guide, box art, or something I'm interested in.

They also deal in a lot of stuff other than books, from action figures to some electronic equipment.
