My husband loves golf and we would like to find a home in or near Newport, but would like to know more about the area. I love the mountains. Please share with us. We now live in SFL and hate it, but if we can find a reasonable home in TN we can buy now.
Thank you!

What would you like to know? If you do a search at this forum you'll find several threads that mention Newport, and most are negative.

I personally find Newport to be a dirty town. It hasn't grown much in 40 years even though it's in an absolutely gorgeous setting and is right on a major interstate. It seems that whenever there's news in the paper about a moonshine still, or some meth-lab-in-a-trailer, or a busted illegal gambling or dog fight ring, it's invariably in Newport.

But it is really, really beautiful around Cocke County.

You're right! It's funny that the CD sensor thing bleeped out that word. But yes, Newport is notorious for rooster fighting.

No offense to Newport intended...but redirect your sights to Dandridge. It's just as beautiful and a bit more civil. And actually closer to lakes and golfing than Newport.

I have to agree with BST and the others, you may want to look more towards Dandridge if you are set on that area of TN.
The other issue that needs to be addressed is jobs. Are you going to need work or are you retiring?

It's not too much of a stretch to say that Newport was and possibly still is East Tennessee's version of Gomorrah. The town earned a reputation long ago for lawlessness and rampant political corruption. I doubt things are quite as bad there as they used to be, but I can't think of single positive thing about the place other than its natural setting.

Here's a hair-raising report on Cocke Co. vice by the Knoxville News-Sentinel:

And since that report they are still getting busted ALL THE TIME. It is a way of life there. Best recent one was when the feds found a pot farm in the Cherokee National Forest. The natives had a series of caves they escaped through.

Those people have been there for generations, have been fighting the ATF for just as long. If you turn down the wrong dirt driveway you could get your tires shot out or worse.

Stay far away.

That's not necessarily limited to Cocke County. I would say anywhere in ultra rural areas, don't turn down private roads without just cause. Especially in Cocke County. And parts of Unicoi and Southern Greene counties...

I agree with ya. Just sayin'.

Yeah. I was tryin' to be nice. You say too much and people get belligerent, but that is EXACTLY right. Stay on the main roads of the main city. The city is your friend. Elsewhere is an upside-down mirror.
