I'm finally getting rid of cable after 7 months of bad service.
Does anyone here have AT&* fast DSL internet service, and how does it compare with C*****t. I work from home using internet and phone and need something fast. I've heard that their new service is just as fast.

I'm also thinking Direct TV.

Thanks

I've got AT&T DSL. It's as fast as friends' cable I've used. I'm happy with it, can't remember the last time it went out.
There are two tricks to making it work consistently:
1. Plug the electrical supply for the modem directly into an outlet, not into a circuit breaker or power strip.
2. Separate the modem as much as possible from the base of any cordless phones or other wireless equipment. It messes it up. I was having problems after I bought a new cordless phone and that last tip solved it.
I've got Comcast cable TV at the moment and also thinking of going to DirectTV. Tired of the sound going out on random stations for weeks at a time.

DSL comes in on your phone line. You just need the modem and the phone filters they'll send you. There's no installation required.

Well we cannot get DSL !!!! I just placed the order which it accepted for phone +internet. On the confirmation email it says no DSL here. Isn't that ridiculous, if we can get the phone line ok why can't we get the internet.

Your local "station" has to have the data equipment in it, and the phone line has to meet some minimum standards.

I have AT&T and I've been very pleased with it. I have their faster 6 meg service (about $42 a month i believe), and it generally averages about 5 megs in reality, which I've been very pleased with. Also, I've never had any problems with the service going out for any period of time at all (which from what I understand, isn't the case with cable internet). Overall, if you need super fast speed for specialized things, then maybe cable might be better, but for reliability, I prefer DSL.

I used to have DSL and will never, ever have it again. Now I have Comcast and LOVE it. The few times I've had problems with my service the Comcast employees have been great.

My parents also had DSL and it about drove my mom into insanity. They now have Comcast and love it.

Just curious, what kinds if problems did you have with DSL? I've had mine for about a year and a half and have had virtually no problems (except a minor problem with the router a few times). I use mine constantly for streaming radio and video, etc. and it works great. Guess maybe I just got lucky. I do live in a smaller town though and I don't think there are very many people on DSL in the area, so that could make a difference. Also, as I said, I've got their top package (6 meg) so I can't comment on how their basic service is.

Anyway, I've never had cable high speed, but we have Charter in our area and I've heard lots of complaints about them, so I'm pretty happy with AT&T so far.
