We're moving to the Knoxville area in 2 months, and are looking for any advice we can get. My husband's job will be near Louisville, and we're looking to live in a neighborhood that is not too far from his work, but also not too far from downtown Knoxville. We've been in a pretty rural area for a while now, and are looking forward to taking advantage of all that the city of Knoxville has to offer. We're not so keen on subdivisions where all the homes look the same, and we'd have to pay HOA fees. We like older homes...those with some character, and though we'd like a nice friendly community and don't want to be too isolated, we'd love a little bit of land. Based on things I've read here before, I've been looking at Sequoyah Hills, but wondering if anyone has any other suggestions. Also, if we lived near Louisville, about how long a drive would it be to the city? I can look at the mileage, of course, but wondering how long it would actually take to get downtown. Lastly, would love some advice on banks. Anyone have suggestions? Thanks!

We use First Tennessee Bank. They have alot of locations around the state. Sorry I can't answer your housing questions. Someone will be along that can help.
All the best in your move,
Pam

Thanks, Pam. I was originally thinking of banking with Suntrust, but then read a bunch of horror stories from local customers. I despise Bank of America, which I know is another of the big ones there. I'll check out First Tennessee.

Actually, Bank of America is not big here at all. They have only two branches in all of Knox County: one downtown (without a drive-thru) and one in West Knoxville with a drive-thru. I use Bank of America.

I agree with Pam, First Tennessee is a good one.

My parents use Regions Bank and absolutely adore it.

What's your price range for a home? Do you have kids and need schools?

When you say land, do you envision wooded hillsides, mown lawns, or rolling farmland? I'm guessing this is low on your priority list if you are looking into Sequoyah hills.

Unless you consider 1/2 - 3/4 acre is a "little bit of land". Which I guess in some parts of the country it is. I'm thinking Lakemoor Hills for bigger lots.

Thanks for the bank suggestions. As for homes...we don't have children yet, but hope to start a family soon so schools districts are important to us. We'd like to stay under $500,000 for a home (which seems totally reasonable with the great cost of living there). Regarding the land, at least an acre would be ideal. We would absolutely love wooded hillsides...not as excited about mown lawns. I did consider Lakemoor Hills, but couldn't find much information about it. Also, there doesn't seem to be a much for sale over there. There was one home we really liked, but I think it was sold. It has beautiful lake views as well as wooded hillsides. Sigh. We really are trying to avoid what I've seen called "knox boxes". Thanks for your help!

As far as exceptional, older homes with good neighborhood schools, it is going to be hit or miss, except for Sequoyah. Personally, I love that area, but you have to look at the MLS for other homes. They can be found in the city of Maryville, for instance. That's an excellent school system. There a few over in Concord. They are there but you have to look a little harder to find them.

Thanks, hiknapster. I was wondering about the city of Maryville. It certainly would be convenient for my husband to get to work, but I was concerned that maybe it was too far from downtown Knoxville. I also thought maybe it would be a less diverse community than some of the others. I will look into Concord, as I haven't looked at that area at all.

Welcome to Knoxville. I bank with BoA and even though they have a small presence here, I never had any issues. Thing I love about BoA is that whereever you go in the US you will find a branch.

As far as the area, I tend to like West Knoxville but that's my choice. I say that you guys should come down and drive around to get a feel for the area.
