What I don't see mentioned is that the word "La Luz" means "The Light" in Spanish. It isa popular word/phrase.

La Luz is a census-designated place (CDP) in Otero County, New Mexico, United States with a population of 1,615 at the 2000 census. La Luz is located immediately north of Alamogordo and lies in the eastern edge of the Tularosa Basin and on the western flank of the Sacramento Mountains. Until 1848, La Luz was a part of Mexico. The CDP gets its name from the Spanish word for "light."

That is incorrect. Kinda. La Luz was only part of Mexico from 1821-1848. That one sentence makes it seem as they are part of Mexico or eons. Prior to 1821 is was part of New Spain. Actually I believe that were La Luz is they were part of the Republic of Texas starting in 1836. My memory could be wrong.

Default Jobs in las cruces

Hi -

I have been here since November, 2011, and am weighing the pros and cons of that move. You might want to try applying at WSMR (White Sands Missile Range)..a government job but they do pay well. Today I am going to the Workforce Connection to discuss the details of an Office Coordinator job..do not know the company involved yet.

Not everything here is all positive...very windy at times with alot of sand blowing around; you DO need a car to get around; rents are not cheap, gas prices are the same as anywhere else and you need to go to Albuquerque or El Paso to shop. We do have a farmer's market here and a few interesting artsy things.

Hope this was helpful.

Martha

Good advice re: the job search.

Have to say, I'm kind of surprised by the shopping comment though.
I find pretty much everything I need in Las Cruces.

To each his or her own, I guess.

La Luz falls pretty deep within what used to be New Mexico territory so I don't think that it was part of the Republic of Texas.

Regarding the name (from Wiki):

"There is some dispute over the founding of La Luz. By some accounts it was founded by Franciscan friars as early as the early 18th Century and called Nuestra Senora De La Luz (Our Lady of the Light). "

La Luz, New Mexico - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

That one sentence in Poncho's post was worded rather oddly. It sort of sounded like only La Luz was part of Mexico but not, perhaps, Alamogordo or Las Cruces...

Anyway, this gives a terrific sense of how close the two countries were not that long ago:

"In 1850, more than 60 families packed up and moved across the Rio Grande to Mesilla, a newly created village on the Mexican side of the river. The small community quickly became a haven for families and individuals who preferred living their lives under Mexican rule rather than U.S. But in 1854, the United States purchased a 30,000 square-mile strip of land along the U.S./Mexican border known as the Gadsden Purchase. Mesilla and its residents were again U.S. citizens."

I got the phrase directly from one of your references, and that exact phrase is still there...
