My wife and I are considering Las Cruces as a possibility of places to move. Although we will visit before we move, I was wanting to get some info on the weather beforehand. I've looked at the monthly temperatures there and they seem reasonable. I don't care for heat and humidy but I'm willing to compromise. I've lived in southern fla so I know I can' handle heat. I've been to Phoenix and was curious if the weather is comparable. It looks quite a bit cooler in LC. What are the winters like? Are the summers so hot that its hard to get outside and do much? How long does it take to get cooler temperatures in the mountains?

It makes no sense to compare FL heat to that found in the SW desert regions. With the reality of global warming, all summertime temps of the SW are on the increase and can reach "extreme heat" proportions. But LC historically has never seen the kind of temps that Phoenix routinely sees each summer. Mornings in LC can be quite comfortable before the daily heat builds to mid-afternoon highs before cooling back down at sunset.

Las Cruces has a climate more similar to Sierra Vista or Sedona in Arizona than Phoenix.
IMO much better year round.
For snowbirding, Phoenix for sure....living year round ...Las Cruces.
Ive lived iin Ft Lauderdale and near Orlando.... and also in El Paso.
Florida and El Paso are not comparable.
There is no humidity in El Paso....... It does not rain at 3pm every day like in Florida. You do not sweat the instant you walk out the door in El Paso.
So, 104 in the summer is hotter than 95 in Florida.... but you are not drenched in sweat either. The cooling that happens in the desert when the sun goes down does not happen in Florida.
So, for me, the desert weather is more comfortable than the subtropics.....
How common is snow in the area? Annual snowfall says 2 inches so I'm guessing pretty rare. Have there been any major snowfalls there before? Obviously the mountains are a different story. I'm speaking primarily about the metro area.

I have lived in Las Cruces for 15 years. In that time, by far and away the most significant snow storm was Christmas Day 2015. 11 inches of snow fell that day. Other than this storm, 3 inches would have been the most snow I have seen in one snow event. In all instances, the snow will have evaporated into the atmosphere very quickly as we are blessed with a dry climate. Overall, in the time I have lived here, there may be 5 total instances of measurable snow.
The only time of year that is actually unpleasant (outside of a week or two where the days are too hot in the summer) is the spring. It's windy most every day and the temps are so nice you're wanting to be outside but you can't. The noise of the wind, even inside, gets to me after a while too. Still, it's a fair trade off (compared to other places) for the rest of the year being very, very nice.

mike0421 - how long did it take for that 11" of snow to melt away?
