The NMDOT has announced that the $50 million dollar expansion from 4 to 6 lanes of I-10 from Las Cruces to the Texas state line in Anthony Texas should start by late summer and last 18 months. Great news for Las Cruces and South Central New Mexico for business, medical, travel etc. to and from El Paso some 40 miles away between the two metro cities.

I-10 expansion could start by summer - Las Cruces Sun-News

6 foot 3 dude:

You drive a lot (while listening to Duran Duran).

How does the need for expansion down there compare with the need to
expand I-25 from Albuquerque to Santa Fe?

"... the 20-mile project, from Las Cruces to the Texas state line ..."

So 50-miles from Albuquerque to Santa Fe would be $125 million.

I don't do the Albuquerque-Santa Fe route that often, but I-10 between LC and EP could definitely use the extra lane. This is not a pork project.

LOL, nope that would the really cool poster in the City Data Music forums 'Lady Ice' who is from Australia as she loves Duran Duran. I'm a 'Blondie' dude .

I'd say they both compare about the same as both albuquerque to/from santa fe is as busy as las cruces to/from el paso. Here's the problem ........the new federal stimulus has picked this project because NMDOT is broke ($500 million rail runner) so las cruces gets this $50 million project and albuquerque gets the new $35 million paseo volcan interchange (this summer).

The approximately $200 million project from abq to santa fe is on hold as is the $200 million I-10/I-25 interchange (Southern Big-I) for las cruces is on hold until future monies can be found for both of these projects.

Are there any side roads that go into El Paso from Las Cruces ? I ask this because I do not like to drive on highways. I don't care if it takes longer & I would love it if it were prettier & more scenic .

State Highways 478 and 28 both run parallel to I-10 from Las Cruces south to the Texas state line. Both are much more scenic than I-10 as they run through the valley (pecan trees, onions, chiles, lettuce, cotton, etc.)

There are two super nice drives to the west of I-10 that go to and from Las Cruces to El Paso/Canutillo about 35 miles.

You can drive from Mesilla Park on NM 478 that goes thru the rural communities of Mesquite, Vado, Berino, Anthony, Vinton and finally Canutillo as you'll see mainly dairies, farms and ranches etc..and actually has an ''old mexico'' feel to it along the drive.

You can also drive from Mesilla on NM 28 which is a bit further to the west along the Rio Grande River and Bosque area's and go thru the rural communities of San Miguel, La Mesa, Chamberino and also comes out at Canutillo as it is also a nice drive to and from El Paso.

I only got mine posted first because mine wasn't as thorough as yours. Shorter typing time.
