I just transferred to UNLV from Iowa State for Design. When I was in Ames, I worked for Penny’s and they have given me an opportunity to transfer to their store the Boulevard Mall, which is super close to campus as you know. Since checking the area out and talking to couple of people, I have heard a few “things” about the mall and the area. Without sounding too silly, I am girl and I will be working a lot of late nights, weekend nights, etc. Do I have anything to worry about?

Thank you for any help~

Hi There,

The Boulevard Mall has been in decline for the last 5-10 years. Many of the stores have closed and the surrounding area is pretty rough.

I would be equally concerned about the store's profitability and the nature of the area. I wouldn't walk in fear for your life but there are druggies, bums and a lot of nuisances in the area as well as a lot of public housing/gangs due west of the mall. Just use common sense, have a buddy around when possible and maybe get security to escort you late at night and you'll be fine. The campus and surrounding area at UNLV has similar issues to contend with.

That mall is in a troubled area. Do as Spraynard suggests...walk out to your car in the evenings with security or in a group.

That mall has been in decline for years now, be careful and always aware of your surroundings.

Sometimes, it's not just the bums and druggies you gotta watch out for. Well-dressed Joran van der Sloot's (Urine van der Poop) can be hanging at any poker table at any given time.

thank you so much for your response. When I researched the Boulevard Mall reference to a "crack alley" kept coming up. But i was confused because they said the area behind the mall is very nice and has nice apartments. Is this crack alley a term for the mall?

for the general area west of the Mall....it has/HAD some beautiful apartments but in the last few years has become a haven for crackheads n crackhos....I would probably not comsider ANYTHING within a 5 block radius of the mall just for safety....closer to the university is also not the best but is a step up

FWIW, I am not from Las Vegas but will be relocating there in July. While the area around the mall and UNLV did not seem to be the best, they hardly seemed to be as bad as people on this forum make them out to be. I also drove around this area at 11 PM, and saw nothing unusual. Last time I checked on crime view there was about 80 crimes in the last 60 days. While this is a lot, there are several areas in different directions around campus and the strip that have >140.

I have lived in suburbs around New York, which are pretty nice areas, and the "bad" areas of Las Vegas seemed equivalent to some of the more commercial/working class areas where I grew up.

so you based your post on driving around an area at 11pm at night which didn't look too bad and you don't even live in Vegas?

Spoken like someone who wants to move to Las Vegas to have fun, I mean go to school, and can't afford a "decent" place to live...so is rationalizing..."oh, it's not too bad over there".

But of course, you don't live here and you know more than the residents do

Anyways, have fun and enjoy your stay in crack alley, lol...
