As of June 18, 2010 , Nevada's Unemployment Rate has climbed to 14.1 % .

The highest rate surpassing Michigan..

I tried to cut and past the article. It was in the Las Vegas Sun Newspaper...

We already had this article on here a few days ago posted by ShepNYC...this is a duplicate and the moderator moved that thread to the Nevada Section.

You could never spread doom and gloom to me after being in Las Vegas and then experiencing a day in Detroit yesterday. Compared to the vitality and energy of LV, one would think the unemployment rate in Michigan was 87%. As we were doing a day of casino hopping, at one point we asked a police officer for directions to a casino we couldn't find and as he helped us, he told us never stop or never speak to a single person on the street; it is totally not safe. At every corner, we encountered pan handlers. The casinos were doing a decent enough business but we did not see one single jackpot happen in any of them. The machines took our money and immediately went south and I saw for the first time, a blackjack pit with full table that was totally manned by a machine that did the dealing mechanically for the table. Total pits as far as I was concerned.

Now you've got me wondering. I'm going to have to ask somebody if they count the Interstate claims from former Nevada workers. I'm also curious if they count the Interstate claims filed against other states from here.

Why did I never think about that when I worked there? Stupid Stupid Stupid.

Is it really a surprise? CONSTRUCTION.

I mean, hundreds of thousands of people moved to Las Vegas...for the big housing boom...and the house building boom went bust - as it did throughout the country.

They are basically construction jobs that are lost. So, if you are in construction, than Vegas would be a bad place to find construction work.

Outside of the construction building jobs (and things connected to it - real estate, house flippers, etc), I'd think that most of whatever other jobs were available before, are still available now...except that they might need a few more people to readjust to the much larger population than before.

But with that amount of people coming in before...you can't suddenly lose all your construction jobs, and expect everyone who came for construction jobs to be fully employed doing other things...particuarly when you take into account the masses doing the unemployment thing and riding out that free ride as long as they can as well - as, 'I can't find another construction job' is ideal for unemployment benefits.

Maybe I'm wrong...but that's my personal take on the stats behind the current rate.

Yep, I'd like to see the numbers with the laid off construction workers taken out of the equation. And it's not just framers, sheet rock hangers, and laborers, it's all the office staffs, and people who sell them their supplies, too.

The paper today said they sold over 500 new homes last month and that's up 33% over last year. But that's way down from the 3000 a month they were selling during the boom years.

i'd like to know the number of people that can find a job, yet won't take it since the wage is the same as or lower than the unemployment checks that they are getting

Rather than start a new thread, I thought I would revise this one so readers can see what's going on with unemployment since this thread was started.
I am really getting tired of Vegas being number 1.

Nevada unemployment climbs in July

Breaking

Unemployment in Las Vegas closed in on 15 percent in July, as the city and Nevada overall both surged once again to record jobless levels

Maybe too many people moved there period. Las Vegas was always a small city that LOTS of people VISIT but few people LIVE in. It was not cut out to be like L.A. or Phoenix. Maybe it has too many residents now and needs to cut back about 20% or so.
