There are still many jobs in Las Vegas. Whether you have the qualifications to apply or not is another thing.

And, I do not talk about jobs required no skills or no college education.
Could you be more specific? What jobs are available and what education and/or experience must one have to be considered for one of these jobs?

That said, of course, the job market here is terrible. I recently filled a low paying position ($30,000/year) and had 90+ resumes faxed over within 2 days of posting nothing but a Craigslist advert. Some applicants were incredibly overqualified. I'm not exposed to the perspective of the job-seeker, as I own a small business with very low turnover, but that response really brought things home to me. Last time we ran a similar ad in 2005 for a $30k/year job, there was virtually no interest.
Yes, it makes sense if you consider these folks have children to support, a house to pay for, and bills suitable for people who USED to have decent jobs.

With no benefits, a simple child's earache will cost you over $150 when you add up the doc and the medications.

Low pay is one thing but screwing people out of benefits and labeling employees as part time so they don't have to is downright criminal if you ask me. Sadly it's nothing new and not specific to Las Vegas. However, when times get tough it's usually the little guy who gets the short end of the stick.

So true. Many companies trying to keep their employees part-time rather than full-time to avoid healthcare, benefits, etc.

That and the temp agencies are one of the largest nation companies employing people (i.e. they aren't required to pay for health insurance either, etc.)

It's one of the many problems wrong with linking healthcare with people's employers.

I do not understand what you guys are saying. I have worked full time (40 hours) at my job for over 3 years now. I get absolutely no benefits such as vacation pay, health insurance, sick days, etc. The only thing I get at all is time and a half on holidays, that is it.

Agreed, I thought you meant single people with no children like me.

The company that I work for is looking for several IT positions, not entry level, more like Sr. and Lead positions.

Just a week ago, we just hired a guy from Arizona to move here and work in our team.

So, saying that there is absolutely no job in Las Vegas is not true.

I agree. If you got the right stuff, I still think you can find a decent job here in town.

But it's not like during the boom time..when you could get a job with little or no skills for our particular job market, and you were able to just move here and obtain employment within a week or two.

In fact, during that time it wasn't even an issue about moving and getting here employed. It was a given.

But it isn't now.

That's what's changed in this current Las Vegas economy. Two sentences in the article say it all...

"The job fair gave some people hope, though people didn't walk away with job offers in hand. Recruiters received a flood of quality resumes.
"The quality of the candidate pool has been increasingly getting better, so we're able to be a little more choosy in who we want for the experience and education," said Calderon."
