I have been to Las Vegas 55 times since 1984 and plan to visit again in a few weeks. I am tired of visiting the "newer is better" stuff on the strip and want to visit alot of places that were not built AFTER 1995. I had some of my best Las Vegas memories from 1984-1995 so I am looking to sort of re-visit that era on this up-comming trip.

I remeber when Texas Station, Fiesta, Sunset Station, Boomtown(now Silverton), Gold Strike(Primm), Buffallo Bills(Primm), and Rio were all bulit and am sad to see how according to reviews/photos on Trip Advisor, Yelp.com, ect. that alot of these properties(Silveron/Rio are still decent ) have really been neglected the last 6-7 years. I guess all of the $$$ they made before 2004 never really went back into maintaining the rooms, cleanliness, and general upkeep??

This is basically the whole "bumber crop" of Locals Hotels that were built in the early to mid 1990's so I hope they start maintining things better in the near future.

Strange.

Any insight or opinions on this? Am I over-reacting?

Thanks.

First, the Gold Strike in Jean, NV and is a minimum of 30+ years old.

You can generally get rooms in the $20s and $30s in most of the hotels that you mentioned due to lower occupancy rates due to the recession.

One of the eternal truths of the hotel business is that when the economy is bad, the first expense that gets deferred is maintenance and room refurbishment. For example, most room refurbishments that were scheduled in 2001-02 was delayed until the industry recovered in 2004 and 2005.

I would read Tripadvisor with an ENORMOUS grain of salt. So many people have unrealistic expectations or use TripAdvisor to air any grievance with a property. My favorite recent post was the person who was ticked off because the front desk would not let then check in at 5 am for the NEXT day.

I never see the rooms since I live here, but the hotels you mentioned have all made a whole lot of remodeling changes, at least in the public areas, and since in Las Vegas everything changes constantly, these hotels have changed the changes many times. Have you seen these rundown hotels yourself, or just read complaints on line? I read those reviews too, when I plan to travel, and I'll see one person raving about a hotel while another gives the same hotel a one star because he didn't get enough towels or something.

Since most of our hotels are nicer than most hotels in other cities, in answer to your question, you may be over reacting. But the only way to compare any of our hotels is with all of our other hotels. Santa Fe Station isn't the Bellagio, but it beats most of the hotels I've stayed in around the country.

BTW: I'm sure you just made a typo error, but I think a lot of people need to know that it's bumper crop, not bumber; it means extraordinarily abundant or full. Since we have more hotel rooms than any other city I suppose you could say there's a "bumper crop" of hotels in Las Vegas.

Gold Strike may be 30+ years old but the Gold Strike(hotel tower, casino, restaurants, ect.) that is there now was built in the early 1990's.

I have read reviews for these places for the last 5-7 years and more and more reviews say how things have definately gone down hill at a majority of the hotels I listed within the last 5-7 years. Dirty, rooms that are dated, property maintained at a bare bones level, ect.

These hotels aren't even that old!! and for the owners to just let them age with bare bones room renovations, spotty cleanliness, ect seems like such a waste becuase these places are relatively still so new.

Silverton(formerly Boomtown) seems to be on of the few who have made any effort in keeping things half-way fresh and up-to-date.

I know there are lots of new off-strip hotels/casinos that were built after 1995 so if I do not like the ones built before 1995 I should go to them.

I am not sure yet where I am staying for my trip in a few weeks.

Thank you for the replys.

When I was in Vegas last week, the locals places I went to (Texas Station, Gold Coast, a couple others) weren't that bad, considering the prices. They were never the most desirable places anyways. The Cannery seems a bit lower, however. If you want a locals place that's nice, try the Palms, or one of the very nice Station properties (Aliante, Red Rock, GV Ranch). The South Point a bit south of the Silverton is also great.

I have not personally stayed in the rooms, but often go to Red Rock to the theater. It seems like a top notch happening place and I believe they run a shuttle to the Strip. It's a nice place to get away from all the tourists and there is a lot of restaurants and shopping nearby.

I've never seen any of the rooms in the major hotels on the strip. I stayed at the Las Vegas Club on Fremont Street back in March. The room was definitely dated, but it was clean. I couldn't find the remote for the TV my entire stay so I had to watch TV manually

The room was satisfactory though. But that hotel is in desperate need of a remodel.

The strip hotels seemed modern, shiny, and new compared to Fremont Street

Just curious....do you work there or are you a Boyd stock holder?
