Why do people watch the local news anyways? No matter where you go watching local news surely will shorten one's life span. If you believe the LV news you'd think every neighborhood is overrun with youth gangs and home invasions, plus dozens of mothers a day are abandoning their kids in dumpsters. No need to watch the weather in Vegas, its pretty damn predictable 98% of the time. No need to watch the sports, there pretty much is nothing to cover locally other than UNLV basketball.

So why even bothering watching it?

Las Vegas news is entertaining to me. Its not like anywhere I have lived before. Plus it reminds me of back home a little(Savannah, Ga) while watching TV with my parents when I was young. All my parents would watch was local news. I used to hate it.

After living in Japan, Italy and Korea for 7 years total. I started to miss local events that I could comprehend and relate to. Kinda brought a taste of home back to me except when I was stationed in Utah...the local news there was very BORING.(cat stuck in a tree stories) Couldnt stand it and never really watched it.

BTW, whats wrong with keeping up with the latest trends in home invasions? Im sure after someone watched that segment, they were more aware of leaving their garage door open.

Thank highly paid news consultants for that. Most stations use them. One of the things they do is coach the "important" anchors in things like: Be sure you look at the other anchor when he/she is taking and shake your head in agreement. (e.g. look like an idiot). They also keep stations up on what is working or not working in other markets. And they do focus groups on the local personalities to see who is liked, who is polarizing the audience, who you should try and steal from your completion, etc. You wouldn't believe some of their tactics. One time we tried to hire a popular female anchor from another station because she was, a: better than anyone we had; and 2: beating us up in the ratings. She wouldn't come on board even when we offered her a huge pay bump. She did go back to her station with the knowledge she was underpaid, and she demanded and got a big raise. Later our news consultants found out she was homesick, so they got a station in her hometown to hire her just to get her out of town and end the competition with us.

The movie, Network, is in my top 3 favorite movies of all time. It's classic.

Because some of us like it regardless. I only watch the first 7 mins of it then switch to something else. With Channel 13, i get the weather first, top news stories, any breaking news, then i can leave. But i don't watch it at night anymore. I sleep better now.

I'm with Pink on this one. If I'm not already asleep by that time then I'll watch the headlines and turn it off by 10 after, otherwise I'll make some comment on how bad they reporters dress (I think some of the guys throw a dart at a tie and decide to put it on even though it doesn't match the suit)

That's exactly why I stopped watching. I used to regularly watch Channel 3 because I personally knew one of the news anchors. Now that he is gone I rarely watch. If I do, it's 3. I think they are the best. I can't stand Fox, they are way too goofy...

You have to watch, at least, the first 5-7 minutes to see what's happening in the 'hood. I want to know if the criminals are getting close!

I figure I'm safe if the police helicopter is not flying directly over my house.
