Investment Group Says It Nears Purchase Of NBA Team For New Las Vegas Facility

We've had several threads on this in the past, looks like there is renewed talks. This time they hint they already have a franchise ready to move and plans to get the stadium built.

I'd be a fan of getting an NBA team in Las Vegas, especially since my Seattle Sonics have left town and I don't have a way to watch live basketball anymore.

What are your thoughts? Vote!

You'd think it would be a good thing, but every time these pro basketball people come to town there is nothing but trouble. We'd rather not have millionaire criminals here making the Strip unsafe as they have in the past.

Besides, the history of sports teams here is that they always fail. It's been an ongoing dilemma here for 50 years. Nobody can figure out why sports just can't seem to make it in Las Vegas.

My guess is They don't make it because there is not a big enough local fan base... Tourism certainly isn't usually for sports, they are focused on the strip and relaxing by the pool. (although the only reason I ever travel to San Fran is for sports, not to explore the city)... wouldn't that be the biggest reason though, not enough people actually care to go to the games consistently? especially something like basketball with so many games... although I'm all for it cause maybe it will put jobs back into the city

I'll take the devils advocate position on that one. Somehow we manage to sell a ton of tickets to live musical shows and circus acts, which we don't have a strong local market for. I'd wager that there are a lot of tourists who would like to buy tickets to night time entertainment, but music and circus acts aren't their thing. Live sports would suit a lot of people, especially all those visitors from other cities that don't have an NBA team and want to see a game. I don't think it's that much different from having regular UFC events in Vegas, and they do great business with a combination of local and tourist crowds.

All of those events happen in facilities attached to casinos.

I would prefer an NFL team over an NBA team.

I agree, but doubt that will ever materialize. The evil word 'gambling' will prevent it.

I do not buy it, that an NBA team will be here if an arena is built. I think it is a ploy to pressure government support.

I don't believe the notion about "millionaire criminals" is a rational or accurate statement. Currently the NBA summer league is in session with many of these "criminals" here in town. I am not aware of any current incidents resulting in deceased safety on the strip. Are you suggesting that the players from the team would come and commit crimes during there stay here?
There were many incidents that did occur during the NBA all star game but if you recall the largest incident at the strip club was with an NFL player and not an NBA player. Your notions about the current NBA is not up to date.
I personally feel that having an NBA team in LV would be a great think, not only would the young wealthy professional basketball players spend money as they visited las vegas, but it would generate jobs.
Of course the use of public funding for a stadium is always up for debate.
