Hello All,
I am moving to Vegas next weekend because I am starting school at UNLV. I have an address, although I am renting a room from a friend, as well as a job offer. I need to know how I can begin to establish residency so I can pay in-state tuition for a couple semesters. I am sure someone can refer me to another post or show me where to start. Thanks.

How about contacting UNLV or looking on their website? (Psssst, google UNLV). I don't know their specific requirements but in other states it's usually 6 months to a year that you have to work or show that you are here to live and not here just for school. I would immediately get a Nevada D.L. and get a job, any job. (After looking at the site you DO have to live here for 12 months to qualify for resident status.)

Have you even applied to the school? Google is your friend! Now if I only knew how to do that fancy "let me show you google thing. "

Or be lazy and let me do it for you....http://www.unlv.edu/admissions/residency.html
(That took about 3 seconds)

Yes I Googled it and its all very generic. The Government websites were the worst too. I was told my first step would be getting a drivers license, but I am unsure about how to even do that. A lot of contradicting information out there.

Look at the link I provided and the application. Generallly you have to be here 12 months. So get a D.L. as soon as you can to prove you have started living here.

You are not sure how? As soon as you get here go to the DMV. DO you have a D.L.?

Nevada Driver Licenses (http://www.dmvstat.com/nvdl.htm - broken link)

No, there is no 21 yr requirement- you only have to be a resident for 12 months. There are additional exceptions to the rule, if you can prove your entire family has moved here, if you are in the military, or a teacher. The application spells it all out.

Are you referring to this fancy tool?

Let me google that for you

I agree. Google is your friend. And so is the search feature on this forum.

Ya I have a California Driver License. I've been to that link but can't really break down the information. Is it as simple as I walk into the DMV and exchange my license?

If you are not capable of following a simple process to get a NV license, one that millions of people have completed before you, are you really cut out for college?

Not trying to attack you, just pointing out that if you are going to school you are about to take on many complex challenges. If you are having a difficult time following a simple step-by-step procedure which is posted online, then you might not be mentally prepared for something even more difficult.

Whoa! This thread makes it seem like a lot of work to get a license. Glad I got mine 15 years ago.
