Thursday my wife and I went shopping at Fashion Show mall after an afternoon of playing poker and lunch at the Wynn. Then yesterday, we hit the Las Vegas Outlets by the airport for the first time before driving down to M for another afternoon of poker. Both malls were jam-packed with people. In fact, the outlet mall aisles were wall-to-wall with people. And as we entered and exited, we saw taxis come and go with shoppers. In fact, there was even a line of taxis waiting in the sunshine to take tourists and their packages back to their hotels. We also did our share of damage at both malls and added to the Las Vegas economy.

BTW, on a related note, we found out about another senior discount of which we were unaware. The outlet mall has "Senior Tuesday" and everyone 50+ gets an additional 10% off of all purchases.

Did you notice any help wanted signs at the mall?

No, but that doesn't necessarily mean that no one had openings. As an example, my wife and I were in a Hallmark store near our house staffed by several ladies and my wife commented to one of them that they all seemed very nice and that the store was serene and that it must be nice working there. The woman then mentioned that they needed part-time help and asked my wife if she wanted an application. So bottom line, you probably need to go in to various stores and ask if they're hiring rather than looking for help wanted signs.

We were also at the Charleston Outlet mall yesterday. Boy was it packed. It seemed busier then when we had been there on a weekend a couple of months ago.

I think a lot of people are taking last minute vacations before school starts back up.

Mid-August is always a busy shopping time for back to school season. In the retail world it is generally the second biggest period of the year after Christmas.

Yes, there are people here with money to spend. My experience says a huge percentage of them are from other countries. My great retail career has given me more opportunities to use my foreign language skills than I ever had before.

I bet there are jobs at all the malls. Problem is, if you have unemployment, you can't afford to take them. The pay is rock bottom.

The restaurants I eat at are jammed. The clubs are packed every night. The parking lots at the store mobbed. While I've been blessed not to have been hit by the economy, I know plenty who have. Things in your rear view mirror are sometimes farther away than they seem.

Aqua, I'm pulling for you buddy. Just remember finding work is a numbers game.

I hear ya. The strip has never seemed busier. The malls are packed EVERY time I have been there lately. Most resturants and bars I have been to lately , on the strip and local, have been real busy as well. I had over 50 people in my local gaming bar at 4 am today. We have never been busier thank God.

It is easy to get a "rosy" view of the economy in a tourist town. The people (families) who have lost their homes to foreclosure are not in Las Vegas. I think there are far more of those people than the tourists who can afford a vacation.

I'm glad you can routinely share with us how well you're doing. However, walking around a mall only further supports that the divide between the have's and the have not's continues to grow larger.
