Ouch, that has got to hurt.

Some live, literally, underground: an estimated 300 homeless people were forced out of their cardboard shelters in the storm drains by heavy rains earlier in the year.

There are more than 13,000 homeless in Las Vegas. One in eight people in the city goes hungry, according to a recent estimate - in a city once known for all-you-can-eat buffets.

P.S. Nothing personal - I simply think visits shouldn't be a one-way street and I'm just returning a visit.

One in eight go hungry? I call bs. You can't count all the would-be models/dancers trying to lose weight fast.

I personally consider it quite stupid. Instead of uniting against those who bring us ALL to poverty, some think it's amusing to bash other states as if the situation in their own is a bed of roses.

So someone from Vegas comes in a bashes your state and you think it's stupid. Yet you feel the need to retaliate?

That story about people living in the storm drains is years old. The local weekly paper did it well before the recession and said many of the homeless just couldn't afford housing in the crazy Vegas market.

Don't doubt there are 13,000 homeless. Agents will tell you about finding squatters in many foreclosed properties. Many of the homeless aren't necessarily on the streets, some live in cars or quietly in hard to see areas like the storm drains, sometimes taking a dive room for a night every now and then when they get a paycheck. Homeless kids sometimes stay with other family or with friends. My friend works in social services and has a new "can you believe this" story to tell every week. Her most recent one was of a family of five where the cook bribed the night manager $100 a month to let his family sleep on air mattresses in the offices and they took showers using the spray nozzle in the dishwashing area. They got arrested when the owner came in one day at 4:30am and he insisted on pressing charges against everyone. So now the homeless kids have two parents in county jail for criminal trespass and were sent to protective services. Sure what they did was a crime, but taxpayers in Nevada are now paying to incarcerate and care for kids, all because a cook's salary isn't quite enough to afford rent.
