I just recently got a great paying job in Vegas as a hyrdologist, but do not want to live in the heart of the city. Does Vegas have some smaller places to live around it kinda like Atlanta does and is traffic as bad as it is in Atlanta? Not really worried about schools (no kids yet) and whats the crime rate like, hell cant be worse then the Atl right? Oh yeah does Nevada have lake front property? How is the weather? Heard it is a different type of heat?

Vegas has a ring of nice suburbs around it with low crime etc. The only small town around is Boulder City...which is very nice and reasonably expensive.

Vegas is similar to Atlanta in that it's one big sprawling metropolis, but it doesn't have the variety of areas with different "feels" that Atlanta does. The Vegas Valley consists of the City of Las Vegas, Henderson, North Las Vegas, and unincorporated areas of Clark County, all of which melt together in a seemingly endless trail of red/brown tile roofs and various shades of tan stucco- there aren't really any "outlying areas" to speak of, unless you trek out to Boulder City, or all the way out to Mesquite, Overton, or the like (none of which are very pleasant commutes).

There are two real "lakes" in the area- Lake Mead and Lake Las Vegas, both of which have lakefront property, but it's ultra expensive. There are areas like Desert Shores and others that have manmade "lakes" (more like large ponds) where you can get some waterfront property, but it's not going to compare to what you're leaving at Lake Lanier.

And yes, it's a different kind of heat- kind of like being in a sauna instead of the steam room that you're used to- but still hot. Don't let the "it's a dry heat" crowd tell you any different- 110 is hot whether it's dry or not. I prefer the heat there to the heat of Atlanta, but neither is exactly "ideal weather".

Bob

Thinks alot Bob sound like you have lived in the Atl. The only thing I hate is traffic. Had a great job at the Buford Dam Project but our program went under and about the only place I could find a Hydrologist job was in Nevada. Me and the wife own a boat and some waverunners, so we were interested in Lakefront property at the minimum of 300,000. We built our place in Ga for 125,000 2 and a half years ago and we have a buyer that will give us 500,000 for it. Not afraid to spend big money but still wanna have a chunk left over. Oh yeah are people mean and snobs out there?

We're actually moving to Canton at the end of the month. I spent 5 years in Las Vegas in the 90's, and the rest of my time in NJ.

Traffic in Vegas is no picnic, but it's not as bad as Atlanta or NJ.

The only lakes big enough for the boat and waverunners (and possibly the only ones to allow the waverunners anyway) are Lake Mead and Lake Las Vegas, and you won't even touch raw land on either of those for $300k- any house that you can park a boat and drive off into the lake will set you back an easy $1 million or more.

Your best bet may be to do what the rest of the valley does- find a home near Lake Mead and either park the boat at a marina, or trailer it to the lake.

Lake Lanier Man, you have come to the heaven for hydrologists. Water in the west, or more, the lack of, is the predominate molder of everything.

As Mark Twain said, "whiskey is for drinking, water is for fighting over"

Actual no amount of money would satisfy his want...there is no lake front property on Lake Mead...it is all owned by the feds...and there are no gas boats on Lake Las Vegas (except those owned by Lake Las Vegas).

Best bet is likely a home in Henderson with easy Lake Mead access. Though that depends on where he works.

And GBG is absolutely correct...there is just no place like the SW for a hydrologist. Likely soon you will know more about White Plains and Lincoln County than anyone should know.

What about Havasu or down on the river in Laughlin? Never been to either, but would those be an option (Laughlin more than Havasu- Havasu maybe to get a weekend home or something)

Not a workable commute to Las Vegas. Could of course boat via trailer or marina on Lake Mojave.
