Sorry to hear about your troubles. Unfortuantely coming to Las Vegas will not make it better, ONLY WORSE.

Good Luck my friend.

You know, I cant compete with other news stories from across the nation - there are many MANY local incidents that dont' make national press....

Be that as it may, let me just say this to you:

I used to live in MIAMI for 20 years...Im from here but Ive been stuck there while everything boomed here...before the boom there was violence, sure, mob affiliated while they were being forced out of the box by the Feds.

Now, in Miami I got there as the cocaine wars were closing up, so you could say the criminal organizations of both cities were going under...both places started "booming".

I spent 20 years in Miami and not ONCE have i seen anything violent...I have never witnessed a public fight, or seen a CSI crime scene with dead bodies, or witnessed gunfights in the street, or anything like that....Sure the news prints stuff, but I never really saw it you so get detached about it...

I come back here and in 3 years time I've seen all of the above with my own eyes - it escalated as the stock market crashed.

i cant say how Miami is now, but you tell me..Ive been through hurricanes in Miami that are tamer and less insane than this city is. Believe it or not.

Vegas will need to sustain growth and with the addition of THOUSANDS of Hotel rooms that will be difficult. A 5% rise in visitors would be negated by a 20% increase in supply of rooms. That will force occupancy and rates DOWN. With increased competition in the next year it is hard to project recovery of any sort.
Currently under-construction is the International Terminal 3 at McCarran, it will bring in more international travellers to the city that is if local officials and LVCVA get their acts together and truly promote Vegas. Vegas geographically speaking is in a great location, in between the States of CA, AZ and UT. What our officials need to do is to promote our city as a hub for international travellers visiting the West Coast. Many international visitors come to see the sights of Southern CA and the beautiful National parks in UT and AZ. Vegas as part of its promotion need to actively encourage international visitors to use Vegas as their hub in visiting CA, AZ and UT, with the opening of the new international terminal, it can be done.

Here is some good info for the naysayers: "With U.S. disposable income and consumption rising, the Nevada economy may be showing initial signs of recovery. Gaming revenue was up a robust 13.8 percent in August and 11.5 percent above a year earlier. August visitor volume and taxable sales were also higher than a year earlier"

"Gaming revenue was up 16.3 percent in August, and 13.8 percent above a year earlier. August visitor volume and taxable sales were also up strongly over a year earlier."

"With the national recovery showing some signs of reinvigoration, the Nevada and Clark County economies—particularly the leisure and hospitality sectors—seem to be showing signs of improvement. "

Uphill climb nonetheless...

Just look at the facts - Vegas is #1 in USA for unemployment for a reason.

I can see arguing coming to a city that's lower on the list, but #1? Why risk it?

Because I am not in construction which "during the past year has lost 24,000 construction jobs" and makes up a lot of the unemployment numbers. We are not newbies looking for our fountain of gold, we just want to get home where we belong. We are teachers and Nevada needs good ones, and I just have to meet this LVD dude...

I guess you haven't done your research. Nevada ranks the has the lowest in education in the United States. I would die first before allowing my son or daughter attend a Clark county school.

I agree with the above....

SADLY...EMBARASSINGLY....Las Vegas is #1 in overweight locals...As well as a poor education system. Much of it has to do with the transiency, but for a city that touts that it has per capita a buttload of churches and schools Im not really seeing the effects of it...

Ive even known a couple of folks who came to Vegas to do some good...Start a church, be a good teacher, be a good WHATEVER to assist...

The church guy lost it on a coworker he says was an incompetent dweeb after 2 years, and he left...The teacher got shafted by the economy layoffs and she took off, as well...

Vegas has been reported to be #1 in the country with the highest unempoyment rate 15%. Since that report I have not seen it lowered, yet...
