It seems that all the people crying about the lack of jobs are former casino workers, or those trying to get into casino positions. There are other industries in Las Vegas besides the casinos though. I work from my home for a company based on the East Coast. I chose to move to Las Vegas to escape rain, snow, and cold temperatures on the East Coast. A lot of people chose to live here for reasons other than the casino industry. My boyfriend actually quit his job at a nightclub 3 years ago because he didn't like the way it was starting to go downhill due to this economy. He applied for a job at an electronics store making money only off commission, and guess what? He still has his job and is doing fine. This summer, he struggled at times making only 3 sales a week, for maybe a $400 paycheck that week and was still able to keep his apartment.

XFiles - I was just stating the irony in that the OP was talking about our education system being so bad out here, yet he had multiple errors in his post. I do agree that the education system does not get enough funding, which is leading to a lot of problems, but at the same time, where are the parents nowadays? Seems like children are learning to disrespect people and classmates from a VERY young age due to lack of parenting. Would you want to teach a classroom of 45 kids each day where 5-6 kids are "problem" children and disrupt your class constantly? My friend deals with this every year in kindergarten!
I am with PinkString, why should we be negative about Las Vegas? If there are multiple things you don't like about the place, find a solution to make yourself happy, or leave, don't bash the place because it did not live up to your expectations. Everyone does have an opinion, but our society is so brainwashed to pay attention to the negative opinions over the positive ones, so of course I'm going to stick up for my beliefs.

Hocky thats good that your boyfriend can get a job elsewhere and manage to keep afloat (cant say much for sales jobs, though). However, I have to disagree on the Vegas-bashing...When it comes to Vegas, it's quite the contrary...People don't really pay attention to the bad news because the bad news isnt reported here to the rest of the world...Its always the advertisements to come here that make press, because thats what this city needs to survive - promotion.

Talking bad about Vegas is actually something Ive rarely if ever heard about before...until the economy actually affected this place for once. Now things are starting to surface and it's really hard to dismiss.

PLus you have to take the CONTEXT of whats being said...Some of us actually say these things to keep people from screwing themselves over, while others just troll because they like to be merely inflammatory.

I don't know...isn't this good news? Isn't this funneling down to LV? Or is it just other places in the country that are recovering while LV stays stagnant?

U.S. economy added 151,000 jobs in October - Business - Personal finance - Stocks & economy - msnbc.com

If all you do is scream "the sky is falling" everyone will consider you to be just a basher, and ignore you. If you report FAIRLY then people will listen to what you have to say

Hi Johnny. I do report fairly.

but you should also consider in your calculations FAIRNESS also does NOT equal saying Vegas is totally fine. It isn't. Check your news. Why am I even defending this?

While I agree with your need to present both sides of the picture (contrary to most here that only want to paint Utopia)...I do disagree with the above statement regarding bad news about LV...It is reaching the East Coast quite clearly...in fact, sometimes over-sensationalized. The word here is that right now, tourist Las Vegas is a huge travel bargain (no surprise there), but residential Las Vegas has been hit the hardest in the nation.

IMO, FALLOUT is doing a good job presenting the counter-opinion.

Well, saying the city is "hit hard" in national news is a broad stroke...Its the reactions of being hit hard that are the things people should see to get a better picture.

Hey I wouldnt post this stuff if it wasn't true.

Check the news. Look at all the headlines PER DAY in local Las Vegas...You tell me.

I'm big on self-defense, and the easiest most effecive and least detrimental way of defending oneself is avoidance. Not buying a gun, not going around displaying your defensive prowess. To defend oneself successfully one needs to be educated of one's surroundings. Ive heard way too many stories about people getting robbed, their homes being burglarized, and people losing their jobs because they were encouraged to come here at the worst possible time, and I think the people who really think about coming here AT THIS TIME should AT LEAST know what theyre walking into when they get here.

People call it DOOM AND GLOOM...Well, I dunno abou the rest of you but an economic collapse spells doom and gloom to me, don't you think? And its going to take a while before things blow over.

Doom and gloom...especially when the existence depends only on tourism and people gambling to survive in a bad economy.

You're just calling a spade....well...a spade, IMO.

Exactly my point. But I'm speaking about jobs and relocation, not tourism. People coming here to have a good time and go home is what the Strip's about, and that's never going to change.

People coming here to start a life for themselves and for their families? Thats something ENTIRELY DIFFERENT, friendo.
