Wow, of all the things to argue about....

Its quotin time...

"1. I have never been a victim of crime and I go all over the city in some of the worst parts. I have family and friends visit and stay downtown and the Strip and they have never experienced anything negative about the city. Crime here is more property crimes versus crimes against persons."

Crimes against persons? You do realize a teacher got jacked a couple weeks ago and died, and a couple got carjacked and beaten a week ago, right? Crimes against persons are all over here, man...read the headlines.

Yes, it is sad and yes that is a crime against a person, but I never said there wasn't ANY crimes against persons. Guess what, that sort of thing happens everywhere, it's not just here.

Strip and Downtown are typically locked down sphincter style by the LVMPD. of course you have your drunken fights or the occasional shot ringing out in the worst case scenario every now and again but generally these two places I can honestly say are safe as MILK - I agree with you there.

"2. Yes there is homelessness; however, it is everywhere. I came from DC where tent cities are big under bridges."

We got tent cities in the streets! In the storm channels! In the foothills for those who dont wanna mingle with the crowds! Like I said before I see alot of this stuff - maybe more than you do cuz I happen around the Northern and Eastern parts of the Strip...You know, OLD VEGAS - Where its prevalent.

I just told you I go to every part of the city, I have clients in the northern and eastern parts and while there are homeless there aren't scores of tents. The only place that there was a homeless city was on Foremaster before Metro cleaned it up. Even along I-15 by Washington has only a few tents scattered along the fenceline.

"3. I have 6-year old twins that have thrived in CCSD, there are tons of parks and activities for them that easily rival what they had in northern VA. They have made tons of friends and the parents all look out for each other."

I dont go to schools so i cant comment...Hopefully the parents with community-fasioned ideals stick around longer to benefit the city. Parks, we got too many parks here - it's actually eerie.
That's my point and don't take this personally; however, people jump on here and make blanket statements about the city without the true facts. While the schools aren't the best in the world, I will take them over many systems in the country including the system I was in as a kid back in Maryland.

Don't know how having too many parks is a bad thing, I guess whatever floats your boat.

This is funny as thse guys FALLOUT and vegaspimp do have a right to thier opinion and can voice it. I just have not seen either one put down anything good about Las VEgas. Yes, it is bad in Vegas, but it is bad EVERYWHERE in the country. Why not move somewhere that the weather is great and there are things to do no matter what economic status you are? We have also given you proof that Vegas is not #1 in unemployment, actually not even in the top 5. Also people have given you info as to the fact that construction and hospitality are the main reasons for the high number(mostly construction) There are jobs out there, ones that can hold you over for 3-5 years until it gets better. The paper just had an article that said many economists see the economy coming back very strong in 2012, moderate growth next year. Many of the people on here, unlike most of the naysayers, have lived in Vegas for years and know that it was better when things were not as crowded, a little slower. Casinos took care of locals better, there was less traffic, and it was just a better place to live and it will be that way for a while again. I keep hearing about crime, Vegas is not the top city in AMerica for crime, probably not even in the top 5 or 10. Go to Detroit or some of the burgs around Michigan, or go to the boarder areas with Mexico and see things much worse than Vegas. You have said that you do not preach DOOM and GLOOM, go back and read, especially this Forum: move anywhere else but here!! Henderson is a great place to live and raise kids, and the schools are fine if you are parents that take an interest in your kids.

Why should I talk about another city in here if Im in the VEGAS CHATROOM? I dont live in another city. I live in VEGAS....?

as for unemployment - Actually FOX 5 said that we were NUMBER 1 and today I just learned that other cities are saying THEY are number 1 also...so Who's number 1? Maybe I should be asking who's number 2....

and unlike most naysayers you refer to Im FROM HERE, mister....not some tourist/resident. And its my home, thats why.

and FYI im not talking about HENDERSON. I AGREE 100% that HENDERSON IS 5000% BETTER. And yes Vegas sux by comparison....

Bajonga? =3

+1 Nolan. Perfectly stated, big rep.

I'll touch briefly on the unemployment, yes we are the highest. Add to that the number doesn't reflect the U-6 figure (part-time and underemployed); however, there are still jobs available. The market has become ultra-competitive where you have 60-200 applicants for one open position. It will get a little easier with seasonal hiring starting up.

Bakersfield-Delano, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area 15.1/Fresno, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area 15.2/Redding, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area 15.2/Sebastian-Vero Beach, FL Metropolitan Statistical Area 15.4/Visalia-Porterville, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area 15.9/Modesto, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area 16.2/Palm Coast, FL Metropolitan Statistical Area 16.3/Merced, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area 16.6/Stockton, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area 16.6/Yuba City, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area 17.9/Yuma, AZ Metropolitan Statistical Area 27.2/El Centro, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area 30.
These are the ones that are worse of than Vegas..These are also Metropolitan areas; there are many smaller towns that are in worse shape than these places. I am gald you live there, for how long have you been in Vegas? I was there 7 years and when we get back we will not leave again. I find it great that there people out there that will speak thier opinions, mister, but it is our home also.

We've been here 3 years now with no regrets. The back of my house looks out to Mt. Charleston so it's really cool to watch the snow on top this time of year. My friends back on the east coast are freezing already and I'm walking around in shorts, the weather is fantastic this time of year.

IMO Vegas has 3 negatives currently:

1. Jobs-I already touched on that.
2. Foreclosures-Caused by both greedy bankers and buyers using no-doc teaser rates and overleveraging their debt buying big ticket items rather than saving for the inevitable collapse of the economy.
3. The summer heat-Can't change that but I always advise people to spend considerable time here first before contemplating a move here.

It's not perfect but it works for us and we considered all over the country. I'll take it over bugs, humidity, hurricanes, alligators, snow, ice, fake people, cold rainy days, etc.

Ok you already lost me with the your home had a direct view of Mt Charleston...Clearly you're MILES away from the city center. But yes your points are true...plus the crime and homeslessness that results which effect the population of Vegas detrimentally, and ultimately come here and damage people the most; like a kicking someone when theyre down.

You know, like steps...only going downward...Foreclosure and joblessness threaten your liveilhood...Crime threatens your Life itself....

You're correct as I'm in the NW about 5 minutes from PinkString.

I'm sorry you have such a pessimistic view of the city. We're going to agree to disagree on these points but everywhere I go I've never felt any sense of danger. I firmly believe that if you use good street sense, the chances of being a victim drop dramatically. Now is that to say I won't get robbed on Monday visiting clients on the Strip? No, but it very unlikely because I'm always aware of my surroundings.

Every other month, I visit Catholic Charities on Foremaster and make donations to feed the hungry. This was homeless central for the longest time yet I never felt threatened, I'll be there on Tuesday to make another donation.

The thing you have to remember is that we could be completely void of unemployment and everyone is in affordable housing yet we would still have crime and homelessness. It's everywhere, no city is crime-free.
