I don't think Vegas has too many museums and art galleries (understandable). But do you guys ever have plays, orchestras, independent films, things of that nature coming into town?

Well...

none of the above? Unless you consider a picture of Oscar Goodman holding a Martini "art"?

Hi AD,

We have all sorts of fun events of that type. One of my favorite series of plays is the Super Summer Theatre that takes place at Spring Mountain Ranch.

We have also played host to several small to medium sized film festivals, the biggest of which, Cinevegas, had to cancel their event this year. I'm hoping it makes a return in 2011.

The best resources to find out about arts, indie films, plays, theatre and such is probably the online versions of the Las Vegas Weekly and Las Vegas City Life magazines. Also, check the various calendars of our local and national parks.

Some of the local high schools put on some strikingly good plays. Green Valley High School did a phenomenal job adapting Rent this past year. The Las Vegas Philharmonic plays regularly at the Artemus Ham Concert hall at UNLV. We also have Shakespeare in the Park, Rennaisance Fair. I could go on, but you will be better served to check out the resources I mentioned.

Another fun outing for arts is our monthly First Friday event...going on right now.

I've loved attending plays at the Las Vegas Little Theatre, UNLV and the College of Southern Nevada. I'm a lifelong lover of the performing arts and have found the standards at these venues to be very high.

I don't understand why you'd say that it "understandable" that Vegas does not have too many museums and art galleries. Is it because of all the comments coming from the critics that Las Vegas is a cultural wasteland?

As any city of its size, Las Vegas has the usual amenities in the arts. In addition to what Spraynard and KiwiKate have said, here is a small sample of other venues in town:

Las Vegas Art Museum

List of Art Galleries

The Las Vegas Philharmonic

The Las Vegas Natural History Museum

The Sin City image, I think, makes outsiders think the entire city is nothing but gaming and prostitutes.

I miss the 2 Guggenheim Museums at the Venetian but the city is evolving and The Smith Center for the Performing Arts might just help with the image of Vegas. The Rio Hotel used to host travelling exhibits. How about the Erotic Heritage Museum? Fits right with the image of Vegas. My friend and I drive by this place on Industrial Rd whenever we go to RA in the Fashion Show Mall for lunch.

I like the art festivals in neighborhoods around Vegas same with the many cultural festivals celebrated on a yearly basis. First Friday is a nice event to have a drink and have a peek inside some of the galleries in the city.

I dont think Vegas is a Cultural Wasteland....Its got loads of personality and art galleries. Only thing is most of it is casino-centric, is all, and the actual art district is smack dab in the bad neighborhoods.

Cirque De Soleil is art!

I personally think the porn-card snappers would be more accepted if they did their thing as a street play...or accompanied by a 17-piece orchestra.
