Lane splitting is a calculated risk that IMO is well worth the effort. CA occasionally does something right and the motorcycle training and driver (car) education is a perfect example. Cars expect motorcycles to share the lane with them and in the carpool lane more than 50 percent of the drivers will actually move to the left to give you room to pass.

I'm too lazy to find the reports, but CA has done studies showing that lane splitting is actually safe. Of course there are a lot of squids out there who ride reckless and pass at too high a rate of speed (it's the speed differential between the motorcycle and the car that causes the problems) which gives responsible riders a bad name.

Unforgiven6262 your comment is as stupid as me saying I get the urge to murder your family. Think before you write something so stupid.
I'll write whatever I like. 9 out of 10 bikers I encounter on the road drive like complete morons asking to cause accidents and frequently do. You can wait behind me just like everyone else.

Yeah and all cagers talk on the cell phone while putting on makeup and sipping starbucks...generalize much or are you just trying to make yourself look less stupid?

Drivers like you are the reason lane splitting makes sense. You're probably the same guy another poster described that drives around in his big 4x4 yelling at people with CA plates to register in Nevada.

Best of luck in life, seems like you'll need it.

I drive in my car watching the road. I'm speaking purely from my observations of people on bikes. The argument that you need to share a lane in traffic that is rarely at a stand still is nothing more than impatience on your part.

Motorcycles have their benefits. One less car on the road. More efficient in congestion. They're even more eco-friendly, sport bikes included. It makes sense for policymakers to give riders certain benefits that don't impede other drivers, which I think lane splitting doesn't do.

If motorcycles were more popular I think people would look at them in a different light.
