I am 24 years old, single, and getting ready to strike out of my hometown for the first time in my life. I have a house here, and a good job... but it's just not fulfilling. I'm not having fun, so what's the point, right?

Anyhow, I'm thinking of moving to Vegas in the next couple of months. Being that I was born and raised in South Georgia, I have a bit of a southern drawl. Ok, a major southern drawl. I'm not a hillbilly, nor a redneck... I'm just from the south, and it is evident as soon as I open my mouth. Clearly, having lived here nearly my entire life, Las Vegas is going to be a bit of a culture shock. I'm trying to prep myself for this, and I was hoping someone around here could tell me what to expect.

- Do you get many folks like me around Las Vegas, or would I be a rarity as a young, fairly intelligent, moderately attractive (if I may say so myself), southern gentleman?

- Would my background be advantageous when applying for a job, or would it be the opposite? In my travels, I've found that people either love the accent or they hate it. What's it like in Vegas? Would the word "reckon" get me killed out there?

- Are the casinos really as rockin' as they look? And if so, how are they for employment opportunities? You know... pay, benefits, that sort of thing.

- If you don't work at a casino... just where in the hell DO you work?

- Are people generally friendly in Vegas, or is it like New York, where you can have a heart attack on the streets and no one will give two cents.

I'm sure I will have more questions, but for now, that's all I've got. I expect to be packing my bags within 60 days, so if you could lend me some advice, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks!

the new postdoc in the lab is from NC by way of GA. she has a significant drawl yet fits right in regarless where we go.

i can't say much re: the accent and its relevance to jobs, but 'reckon' wont even make ppl bat an eye (i picked it up working in WY...it aint just a southern thing)

casinos can be fun, but not really my thing. the only one i frequent on a psuedo regular basis is the boulder station 'cause they have free blues on thursdays and the drink $ won't kill you....HoB also has free blues, but drinks are $$. plenty of decent bars though and i have met a bunch of good peeps so far.

in my experience, people are as friendly to you as you are to them. i've met more friendly than unfriendly, whatever that means.

my advice to you would be to try to line up a job b4 you come (which may not really be possible w/o a LV residence). depending on your line of work, you might need to get that taken care of ASAP (get an address, phone, and ID). based on what i have heard from people here, take any job to start and then work on finding the one you want.

i moved here for a specific job opening so i don't really know what the job hunt will be like. maybe if you elaborate a bit on what you are looking for.

Ive spent some time in the south and I can tell you people are a lot friendlier there. There is something to be said about southern hospitality. Here, you get a very mixed bag of people. It seems like everyone here is a transplant so you get a little taste of it all. Id say the majority of people here are from California. Most of them seem pretty laid back for the most part.

You did not indicate in your post if you have ever been to Vegas or not. If not, Id recommend coming for a visit before you pack your bags for good. Know what I mean? Las Vegas is not at all what I had envisioned in my head before first visiting.

There are a lot of places to work in Vegas besides the Casinos, but a lot of other jobs are some how related to the gaming and tourism industry. There is also a lot more to do than just hang out in casinos, especially if you like the outdoors.

Our newest candidate for Congress has been here for many years and has never lost her heavy southern accent. I came here from West Virginia with a hillbilly twang I wasn't really aware of, and my wife came from Texas with a drawl she didn't know she had. She got a job as a news anchor/reporter on local television. We both sound more like mid-westerners now because somewhere along the line most people lose the accent.

People won't be out sitting on the porch waving at you as you walk by. In fact they won't even have a porch to sit on in most cases.

Some people won't like the accent as you won't like theirs. Especially if they are from the northeast. But Las Vegans are used to everybody here being from all parts of the world and having some very strange accents.

It is a different world from Georgia, but then everyplace is a different world from Georgia except for northern Florida. Just chill. Don't make a big thing of it and nobody will think you're being obnoxious. Nobody, especially the ladies, will want to hear the remarks you posted here. They'll expect you to just be you. You'll learn a lot about the world in Las Vegas and have a good time too.

I was born and raised in the East coast then moved to Cali and lived there for 3 years. Las Vegas was a change but not a shock.

I knew that it was a desert but was still shocked that it really was a desert!! haha I thought my husband could work easy for a casino, wrong! Right now he found a nice job in Sales.

The people seem very nice unless you meet them on the road..lol j.k.

Wonderful food here! I think we have such a melting pot of people from all over the place it seems we get the best of both worlds! To be honest I met very few natives to Nevada and when I did It was like meeting a rock star, "No kidding! you were actually born here!!!" HOLY Crud!" That type of thing..haha

I do have to say I don't know what I ever did with my life before here on a weekend because I seem so much busier then I did before. Not that I'm going to casinos but for me, the town beckons me to do something! anything!

all in all I enjoy it here, except the summers. They say it's a dry heat but really, hot is hot.

We have a standard welcome...

Welcome to Las Vegas

My natural accent is border south. But I don't think anybody would ever know. Work at it deliberately and it can be easily modulated. A strong southern accent will probably not be universally well received. Some will in fact claim they can't understand you. But a mild southern accent is a definite plus. Pick up the cadence a bit and limit the "y'alls" to when you been drinking a lot.

Off hand I can't think of anyplace better to be 24. Some as nice...but no where I can think of better.

Those guys pushing the ads on pedestrians are the worst part of visiting the strip. No other place in America would allow that. What's the story with the ACLU making it legal for them to do that?
