Hi i will be staying at the hilton hotel in vegas in feb from the other side of the world (down under) and am aware that it is far down 1 side of the strip.

Not sure if hotel offers shuttle to the hotel or not, but do know it has its own Mono rail service, my question is how safe is the mono rail and its stations?
because i WILL be playing alot of poker and walking around with hundreds, maybe thousands in my pockets, if it is even a bit iffy i guess i will be catching taxi's

my understanding is that for the rest of the time, one would be safe by sticking to the populated area's of the strips and making sure not to go down side streets??
any places to see or avoid??

Yeah it stops at Hilton. They have armed security so I'd guess the greatest danger would be going to and from station. Never boarded at that station.

I don't really consider crime to be that bad. There will be no reason for you to be walking around on Paradise so just use that monorail you can buy a 3 day pass for 28 bucks.

The monorail is very safe. There's also a new express bus route that runs past the front of The Hilton; you'll find that is more convenient for some of the places you'll be heading, as the monorail has limited stops. I wouldn't walk to or from The Hilton after dark, but daytime there'll be no problems walking anywhere. Good luck to you, & here's hoping you'll be walking around with thousands!

The Hilton is a very nice hotel, but it's not actually on the Strip (though the monorail will take you there). It's on Paradise Road, which is east of the Strip. It's a relatively short walk to some of the North Strip hotels, including the Riviera and Circus Circus.

Enjoy your stay.

The monorail is fine as far as safety goes, but it doesn't go everywhere. It'll do you fine if you don't mind walking a little to get to whatever casino you're headed to.

Where were you planning on playing cards?

Actually, since you're a poker player, why are you staying aat The Hilton? Could you switch to a strip hotel? Somewhere between TI & MGM would put you within walking distance of at least 10 poker rooms, including one in your hotel.

If you're walking around with "thousands" in your pockets, you can surely afford a taxi. I wouldn't walk around Mayberry these days with hundreds, let alone thousands, even with Andy and Barney guarding me. If someone wants to rob you they can do it anywhere, even in the casino, or the hallway outside of your room. It's never been a problem for me, but can't you leave your money in the cage until you need it, and get a marker? I've always been told that the difference between the casino cage and a bank is the cage has more money.

I don't know how the high rollers do it, and I've often wondered how I'll get my money safely to the bank when I hit the Megabucks. I'd be "packin' iron" for sure.

As far as the monorail ─ it isn't the most convenient transportation in Las Vegas. It's a big contoversy here. Not well thought out and millions wasted. There is a stop in front of the Hilton, but it depends on where you are going. It does not go up and down the Strip, but it stops at the back of some Strip hotels. Regardless, it requires a lot of walking. The casinos are huge and it could be nearly a mile to walk from your room to the monorail right in front of the hotel. Good exercise but a waste of vacation time. The Hilton is not on the Strip; it is on Paradise Road, which runs parallel to the Strip, but over half a mile away from the nearest Strip Hotel ...and probably not one you'd be interested in. That part of Las Vegas Boulevard that we call "The Strip", is four miles long, and downtown is four miles from the north end of The Strip.

It probably will be a bit inconvenient as most poker players with thousands of dollars these days want to play at the Wynn, Venetian or Bellagio. None are all that convenient to the monorail, each requires a long walk from a station. If you do decide on the Wynn or Venetian, a taxi ride there won't cost much more than a monorail ticket, probably around $7. Bellagio might cost you $10-12. Walking isn't that bad of an option either, its probably a 20 minute walk from Hilton's front door to Wynn's poker room and while crime is certainly not unheard of, around the Strip its pretty minimal. Just don't walk east or north of the Hilton and you'll be in decent areas.

*WINNER*

Take a cab to the Wynn for less than $10. You can then walk between Venetian and Wynn as much as you want. Considering the monorail is $5 it is worth it.

The only major poker room on the monorail is MGM. The other bigger ones, especially with any kind of stakes are either south of where the monorail leaves the strip or on the other side of the road. You won't find the monorail to be especially useful.
