...and only 159 arrests/bookings. That's pretty good, IMO. People were pretty law abiding, despite all the alcohol involved!

We saw one of the arrests... I didn't see exactly what happened, but as we were walking out of O'Sheas at a little after 10pm, a girl flagged down a security guard and wanted them to "check" some guy that she claimed shoved her. Long story short, he ended up in handcuffs in the middle of a bunch of cops on the center divider. I can't say for sure that he was booked, so I don't know that he was one of the 159, but it was interesting to watch for a minute or two...

An estimated 320,000 people visited Las Vegas to celebrate NY... on Twitpic

At least no Stanford students electrocuted themselves. I remember that incident years ago, I was about 100 feet from that guy and had no idea what was going on when paramedics were desperately trying to work through the crowd to the scene.

Why don't they open up the boulevard to pedestrians? On TV it looked like everyone was crowded onto the sidewalks behind a fence, with all that empty space in the street open. Looks like a formula for trouble to me. When they blew up the Dunes, the whole street was turned into a pedestrian mall. It was like an European piazza. Made me think they should always do that and route traffic behind the hotels.

That's what they did... They gate off the center divider and part of the inside lanes, and shut it down to vehicle traffic.

They do it because it allows the police and emergency vehicles a way to move around even with the huge crowds. The year the Stanford student died they didn't have the barriers and therefore could not see what was happening when the incident occurred and once they knew they had to get there they could not quickly move through the crowd.
