I currently live in Henderson and lived in Az, twice. Once was in Surprise,Az and also Gilbert,AZ which isn't too far from Chandler. We did look into buying a house in Scottsdale but your money does not go as far up there at all. We really lliked Gilbert when we lived there but it has built up a ton since we left. We also looked in Chandler and were going to offer on a house but when we went back for a second look, the new owners were having the house inspected! And the house was still active in MLS! I have lived in Henderson less than a year and so far I really love it. I love that there is so much to do here and I often get tons of visitors and see family/friends often. The weather is cooler here in the winter and summer which I also like as well. I am into sports, but I thought Phoenix lacked fun things to do. As far as raising a family, IMO, I would say Chandler would be the best bet. I have two and a half children and moved here due to my husbands job. But, already at a young age, my kids know that gambling is a huge no no, so I treat living here as a life lesson for them. Good luck!

Just curious, how do people around Phoenix feel that the area is really much different than Vegas in regards to casinos? The ads for casinos are everywhere and anywhere, the TV and radio seem to have almost as many casino ads as in LV and of course if you drive around much on some of the freeways you can't miss the numerous casinos with all their lights. Sure in some parts of town you don't see them, but just seems to me casinos are almost as integrated in the landscape of Phoenix as they are in the LV suburbs.

I've heard Henderson described in many ways over the years, but never before have I heard it referred to as "ugly." You're entitled to your opinion, of course, but I disagree completely. Some of the areas are downright beautiful - more so than Spring Valley, of which I'm a big fan and where I lived previously.

I totally agree with you. Henderson is a very nice looking town. I think it's one of the prettier area's of the entire valley. Lots of green and tree's, and there are some really incredible views of the Strip from there.

A lot less wind in the summer and warmer winters in PHX. Scottsdale is nice, Paradise Valley even nicer, if you can afford it. Cactus League (Spring Training) is a ton of fun too...

Overall these are two very similar climates.

Phoenix is substantially worse in the Summer time. 4 degrees or so hotter and much wetter. Significantly less comfortable.

Turns around in the winter. Phoenix is more pleasant by the same 4 degrees and less likely to get freezing temperatures. A good bit nicer in December, January, February..

As to the wind - average month wind velocities.

PHOENIX, AZ 5.3 5.8 6.6 6.9 7.0 6.7 7.1 6.6 6.3 5.8 5.3 5.1 6.2

LAS VEGAS, NV 7.4 8.5 10.1 11.0 11.0 11.0 10.2 9.6 9.0 8.1 7.8 7.3 9.2

We do however get a little carried away with this one. For instance

SAN F AP, CA 7.2 8.6 10.5 12.2 13.4 14.0 13.6 12.8 11.1 9.4 7.5 7.1 10.6

NYC (LAGA AP), NY 13.7 13.8 13.9 12.9 11.6 11.0 10.4 10.3 11.0 11.6 12.8 13.4 12.2

I have lived in Phoenix for many years. Used to live in Scottsdale, and still have a house in Ahwatukee. (another very nice area)

What I prefer about Phoenix is actually the weather. Although it does get a few degrees hotter in the summer, I think the winters are much better. It never gets very cold, so you have very nice outdoor weather all winter long in Phoenix. It has more of everything in the way of stores, cultural etc. than LV,
but is much more spread out, and traffic can be a pain in the but sometimes and get crazy on the freeways.

The pluses for Henderson, is that there are no state taxes, and there is more entertainment available, and things (stores etc.) stay open to all hours. Never too late to run out for something. Scottsdale, as most of the higher income areas are more "left leaning" politically, whereas much of the rest of the state is "right leaning" if that is important to you. Not sure about Henderson. I think generally speaking, Scottsdale is prettier and has some very cute and artsy areas for shopping.

As for schools. I am not sure how the two compare. Crime in both of those two areas are probably on par with each other. Price of houses will be higher in Scottsdale, along with RE taxes, and state taxes of course. Food, might be a bit higher there too. Can't say for certain. If money is a main consideration, I would probably say Henderson is best. If money is no issue, then I would probably say Scottsdale is best.

i went to college in phx in the 90s, now live outside of vegas. i'd say henderson, hands down! my main reason? i don't golf. as a starving college student, my options were limited. either golf, or shop, or tube down the overly crowded river, or climb a rock in the swelting heat. if you look at the things to do in vegas vs phx, vegas has ooodles to do.

PLUS one of my other complaints was if you did travel to do things, it was a good drive to get anywhere & then, when returning home from a holiday weekend....EVERYONE was on the same freeway as you! there's only I-10 or I-17 & everyone was sitting on the freeway with you, inching towards home.

i don't mind visiting the phx area, always amazed at how much growth has happened since i left, but you couldn't pay me to live there again.
