$3,500 to tear up and replace 850sf of tile? That's $4/sf, which won't even buy a decent tile itself, let alone the setting materials, grout, and installation. Even the worst installation (excluding demo of the old stuff) by uninsured Craigslist hacks is going to run you $2/sf.

Based on the fact that you've got some 1,500 sf of travertine in your house currently, I'm assuming it's a fairly nice home- do you really want to risk a bad install with cheap tile??
