Thanks. That must be why one site said it was closed.

If you have an F4 Nikon, then there is no one in town who can work on it, unless you can find a little, old guy who works on them in his garage.

Do yourself a favor and pick up a small digital point and shoot for the occasion. You can get a nice one for around $100-150. That is most certainly less than the repair to the shutter would cost on the F4.

apparently you dont take pictures. I cant believe you would suggest a point in shoot as a comparison for a professional camera....

Sorry, I didn't mean that they are equal, far from it. However, just that it would be better to get a small camera for the trip rather than miss photos altogether due to not being able to get an impossible repair here in Vegas.

And by the way, in case you haven't looked, the newest digital point and shoots are quite good in comparison to the F4 or any other film camera. After all, the camera body itself is just a box to capture light. What makes the difference is the lens you use. Let's face it, a professional photographer can make great photos with either a $150 p&s or a $5000 dslr. It's all in the way you use it.

problem is Dad would NEVER be happy with a PnS after using an F4...I owned a Nikon stable...F3's with a ton of lenses and i have NEVER been happy with anything I've owned since then

Well, I can understand that, but the bottom line is that it is most likely impossible to get the F4 fixed in Las Vegas. Perhaps Los Angeles, but since the camera is around 20 years old, it may not even be possible to send it to Nikon for repairs. Yes, I do take photos and I do own Nikon, not only film but also digital. I can recommend a good repair place if the OP still wants to get it repaired, but it will entail sending the camera to Rhode Island and about 2-3 weeks of time.

I would add that I think my F3hp has the best viewfinder I have ever used and is great for manual focusing. The new DSLRs don't do manual focus too well, although my D700 (full-frame) has a great viewfinder. I would say the the focusing and metering systems on the new pro digital Nikons are the best I've ever seen, including the Canon DSLRs and the ISO of the D700 and especially the D3s is beyond anything you can do with any film camera. As for image quality, the new digitals, including the better p&s are much better than film. I have a friend who has a new Panasonic p&s that he bought for less than 200 that has a 14 meg image, which equates to a 40 meg file when uploaded into the computer (that makes a 16x22 inch image at normal resolution). And if you really like the look of film, you can get software that will make your photos look like specific film types. While I like my film cameras, I would have to say that the new digitals are every bit the equal or better of film cameras. Just my .02.
