My husband and I are relocating to Las Vegas for work opportunities and my daughter is transferring to UNLV. She wants to live on campus but I am concerned about her safety. Should I be concerned? How safe is it on campus?

Living on campus is safer than apartment living near campus. I suppose the safest possible route would be for her to live at home and drive to and from campus, avoiding campus after dark, but this really isn't possible with study groups and cram sessions. If you're paying for her room/board, then having her live at home is probably the smartest bet.

I don't think UNLV is especially dangerous as far as college campuses go. There is a special UNLV police dept. that monitors the area, there are emergency alarms all over campus that you can signal if necessary as well.

Safe is such a relative term, so I can't tell you if UNLV is safe or not, but I would allow my daughter to live on campus, provided she knew a thing or two about common sense and self defense.

It is a busy high populaiton college campus. I don't think there is any place safer. Perhaps the lobby of the police station or the middle of Sun City. But with reasonable precautions like not staggering off the campus drunk at 3AM...you can't be a whole lot safer.
