I'm also from the great white north. Just a warning though, down here they'll be doing credit checks and if you don't have any US credit history it'll be that much harder to get a rental.

Be careful of Craig's list there are people pretending to own properties and putting renters in them and the renter is left out in the cold. As realtors we have been given a heads up that this is happening and to report anything we find during showings.

Coronado Palms is the latest this is happening in, a man is advertising on crags list saying he owns 16 units in there so be very careful. Look for a property mgmt company. Also some of the REO companies has so many properties that they don't always check on them and there have been squatters found in them as well.

As realtors we have been cautioned when showing properties because some realtors have been attacked and badly hurt. One realtor recently was beaten badly by a squatter when she was checking on a property that she had listed. She has severe brain damage and they are trying to raise money to help with her medical needs.
