I second the saran wrap idea. We did that when we left our Vegas home in the summer. We also always turned off the water. Who wants a pipe bursting while you are gone for months? Left the A/C set on 80 or so. Had the cable/internet turned off and back on when we returned. The phone...they let us turn it off one year and never would again. Don't know what changed there. Our garbage was in our monthly fee..so didn't have to stop that. Newspaper was happy to hold delivery and pick up when we returned.
This was 1999-2006 ..some might have changed.

I don't turn the thermostat off completely. Just set A/C to hold at 90deg in the summer and heat to 55 deg in the winter. Don't want extreme temperatures causing any damage while you are away. The thermostat will kick in only when it really has to and your energy bill won't be high. Might get run a bit more in July and August, but it's worth it to keep your posessions and the structure from any heat damage.

when we first bought our vacation home (now a rental) and we weren't there.. i did exactly what jpk said... 90 in the summer, 55 in the winter... summer was about $90 a month, winter around $50... If it gets too hot, you are screwed, seriously! and insurance wont cover..... the house is 1700sf, 2 story.

In the case of high rise condos, you can completely shut down your AC power when you are gone, the concrete walls can endure high heat.
