So was 393 a week competitive with your job offer?

It is 79 weeks I think at the moment.

Wow, that's really short sighted on their part. To me, any job would be better than unemployment. Especially if it means getting your foot in the door with company that might allow some future advancement.

I bet they are going to regret turning that job down.

Im not sure where your getting $393. If the current wages stated on the applications was correct. They would be collecting the state max that is $450. And the job offers far exceeded what they would collect on unemployment. I guess these new goverment funded vacations is the new rage.

According to the Feds the 2011 max benefit in NV..

NV Unemployment Benefits - Maximum Weekly Payment
Nevada's maximum weekly unemployment payment is $393.00, and the maximum amount of time unemployment compensation can be collected through the Nevada Unemployment Office is 79 weeks.

I was curious as to whether the money was sufficiently close to neutral that the time off and other opportunity costs might override a new job...

Apparently not. Wonder what the thinking was.

Agreed. There's no more depressing sign in a bad economy than a shuttered casino. I was in Reno earlier this year and Fitzgerald's is all boarded up...literally. Yet they light the neon signs for it at night. Everytime you walked past (on the other side of Virginia Street...because homeless bums hung out in front of there) you could not help but feel the negative economy.

Improbable...these were apparently the best of a dept at the old Sahara...

When one sorts a dozen or so down to two and both turn you down it is likely something other than simple work aversion.

This department’s work is really niche and only a handful or people out there qualified to perform the tasks. Sahara was overpaying in this department. Another sign that SBE was clue less in running the Sahara. Unless both candidates where expecting offers from the Wynn or Venetian in the near future. In my opinion it was not a smart career move.
