I helped my parents move in to Sun City Anthem in late March, and I'm now trying to figure out likely errors in the bill. Based on this forum, I did buy them a 32-gallon trash cart so that we wouldn't have to rent one from Republic. Then we called to set up normal pickup and recycling.

So there are two services in the bill:

0 - Trash Cart (95-96 Gallon) Scheduled Service (S1). There is no charge for current months (the bill was dated 4/30 and the charges are for service from 7/1/2010 to 4/30/2011). The Unit Price for this range is $39.81, and they charged for 3 units.

1 - Hand Pickup (0.5 Yd) Scheduled Service (S3). This is being billed at $39.81/month for current months (5/1 to 7/31).

First, they appear to be backcharging us from 7/1/2010 to 4/30/2011, even though my parents have been there only in the last one month of that 10 month period, at a rate of $40/quarter. Is it fair for them to charge us from 9 previous months that we did not own the house?

Second, which is the actual garbage service? One sounds like an additional service we didn't order? My parents generate very little garbage - mostly all fits in the 32-gallon can.

They own or rent?

If they own it should have been picked up in the close and paid up by the seller.

If they rent they should forward the bill to the landlord...it is his problem.

They own and just closed in late March. It sounds like we can get the stuff before late March removed, but still not sure what the bill should look like going forward. Should it be around $39.81/month for basic pickup, under either S1 OR S3?

Trash bill is only $14 a month. It shouldn't be more than that.

The bill is roughly correct. I pay around $40 plus $10 or something for the rented cart. That is about the same as Pinks $14.

We don't pay for rental carts. We get the use of their containers for free. We are on the once a week pickup plan that will soon be all of the valley. If you don't want to pay a container fee, go to Home Depot or Lowes and buy your own.

Call Republic tomorrow and hash it out with them. Garbage collection is billed to the address, no matter who lives there, or even if no one lives there, if I understand correctly. It's kind of like the sewer bill, isn't it OC? Anyway, maybe they will send it to the seller and collect past due fees from them. Let them know if you don't want the rented garbage cart and they'll pick it up. You can buy your own, or just use plastic leaf bags. If your parents plan on doing a lot of gardening, pruning, grass cutting, throwing out old furniture, etc., they might like having the big rental can.

Some community's require you to use the republic trash bins regardless if you have your own. I know that in Rhodes Ranch you must use Republic trash bins so I would check with your local hoa's and figure out if they are needed.

its my understanding that whoever owns the house is required by clark county laws to have trash service. Even if the house is vacant or your not using the trash service, you still are automatically billed $39.xx per quarter and there isnt anything you can do about it.

Ahh, thank you all, it does look more clear now what the bill means. It does look like $39.81 per quarter is the regular rate. However, they do appear to be backbilling for the previous owner. We'll take it up first with Republic and then otherwise with escrow.
