I will arrive on a saturday evening with mom & 9.5 month old. DP might be working. Monday the movers unload the truck. If I were staying on the strip (not yet decided) what could we do sunday & monday (with a baby)? Might have a car, might not. I might just want to do nothing after 2 months of being a full time working single mom! But would like to have a couple ideas if we want to do something.

Sit by the pool. The weather has been perfect.

Drive around and get to know your new town. Notice that we have many landmarks to guide you so you can't get lost. The highest mountains are to the west, and have snow several months out of the year. That range (Spring Mountains) is known locally simply as Mount Charleston.

To the east, where the sun comes up, is the range incorrectly referred to as Sunrise Mountain (it's really Frenchman Mtn), south is Black Mountain (and it's obvious because of the dark "desert varnish", and all the TV antennas), and the Sheep Range is to the north (where you can try and visualize mushroom clouds appearing from nuke testing on the other side).

Closer in you'll always have the Stratosphere Tower, and many large hotels, to guide you back to the Strip.

Las Vegas, as most large, flat, western cities, is laid out in a grid (more or less), with major streets running north/south - east/west, from one side of the Valley to the other. Get to know the major intersections, especially in relation to where you want to be, and you'll never get lost. Helping with that is the fact that the older hotels, even ones that are no longer here, had east/west streets named for them if they sit (or sat) on an intersection with Las Vegas Boulevard (The Strip). Easier to find Flamingo Road, or Tropicana Ave., or Sahara Ave., if you know about where the hotel is located.

Driving you crazy for a while will be some of our infamous re-alignments that suddenly change from one street name to another, but you'll soon get used to it, and figure out why that is. That and the saw tooth streets where there is no development so nobody to pay for paving all lanes.

Correctly pronounce Hualapai Way (Walla pie) and refer to Las Vegas Boulevard south of Sahara Avenue as Las Vegas Blvd. South, and the other end as Las Vegas Blvd North (because there is no North Las Vegas Blvd in North Las Vegas, but there is Las Vegas Blvd North in North Las Vegas), and you'll be taken as a local right away.

Oh yes, did I mention that several numbered streets were renamed, such as Maryland Parkway (12th St., and for about six blocks downtown, 13th), Eastern Avenue (25th St, aka 26th St., aka Civic Center in NLV), and Las Vegas Boulevard (5th St, aka: "The Strip" from Sahara to Russell Rd).

See? It's easy. But maybe you'd better print this out and carry it with you.

What side of the valley is your new home at Blackcats?

Maybe some of us can give you an idea of things to do if we knew where you will be living.

I wouldn't (AND IN IMO ONLY) be bringing a little baby in and out of the casinos on the Strip, even though they have good air filtration systems, you still smell cigarette and cigar smoke, but I'm guessing you didn't want to do the hotel thing anyways.

With a baby and your mother, I suggest you check out the Las Vegas Springs Preserve, enjoy the gardens, the exhibits and the cafe. The cafe serves lunch fare and it is a decent restaurant with a view of Downtown and the Strip. You might even learn things about landscaping in the desert if you come in early enough. They also sell plants at the Springs Preserve on certain times of the year. If you can afford the yearly membership, please do join. With your membership, you can include 3 other names as co-members which can enjoy the same benefits as the primary member. It is worth it and the Springs Preserve is a great part of this community albeit lacking in patronage from the community. Have fun!!

Thanks for all the info! Changing street names won't be much different from the chicago area Correct, absolutely no interest in gambling or doing 'the hotel thing'. I've been to vegas as a vacation twice & for work once as a travel agent so I've seen all I need to off big hotels.

Thanks for the info about the preserve, that sounds really great! DP had a garden here so I know he'll be very interested to see what he can do there. I'll check it out (i don't garden at all but like to know about everything) then tell him how cool it is!

We'll be in Green Valley Ranch. I think that's a planned community name? Right by a couple parks. I think the pool, driving around, & the preserve will be perfect.
