I have traveled NUMEROUS times from Las Vegas to San Diego and I have always hit major traffic between Las Vegas and Barstow. I often sit at a standstill for two hours in Vegas. I have six kids and we are making the drive again **UGH*** on Saturday June 11th around 1pm (we'll be staying in St. George, UT the night before and plan on leaving there around 10 am). Is there another route or time of day I can leave. I would really like to be in San Diego by 9 pm at the latest. I appreciate any of your advice

Sincerely

There's no easy way to go other than I-15 all the way, nor are there any shortcuts. But you could take the Nipton Road turnoff a little ways over the state line in California, and go down through the Mojave National Preserve, through Kelso, to I-40. I know people who have done that to bypass an accident on I-15 between Barstow and Las Vegas. But I've never run into any trouble going to Barstow. It's usually coming this way on a Friday night that's the problem, or going to LA on Sunday. I did spend several hours in a rest stop one Sunday coming back to Las Vegas, due to a really bad accident with multiple fatalities, this side of Baker.

I don't see why there would be a problem, you should be in San Diego by 4:30 pm good luck!

Unless there's an accident or something, you shouldn't have a problem at the time you're planning to go. Maybe tell the kids you want to leave at 9am (or even 8) to make sure you get out by 10?

You could always take the I15 to the US 95 south and then take the I10 into San Diego

I did that once when I15 [not THE I15] was closed because of fires....on ly adds about 3 hours to the trip.

I commuted from LV to Riverside, CA for work for over a year. I would leave late Sunday night, stay the week and skip out to return around 4:00 PM on Friday. There is no practical way around the I15. And if there is a bad accident you are screwed. Carry an emergency pee bottle. But if you have kids the late hours may not be practical for you.

The next time you're stuck in traffic, and moving is measured in inches, shut off the car engine...stick it in neutral...and tell those 6 crazy kids to start pushing. That'll keep them busy, they'll have a great time...and you'll save on precious gas.

Once traffic starts moving, please remember to tell them to hop back in. They're yours to keep.
