Like a dummy, I called my daughter's school to ask, "How many tickets will she get for graduation?' I was told, "oh, we don't have a graduation." In shock, I then said, "oh, so you guys just give the diploma to the kids on the last day of school." The response was, " No, we don't give diplomas, they get diplomas when they graduate from high school" SMH.....I was in total shock. I know we are not in NY anymore but is this normal for the west coast or just Las Vegas or in all of Nevada. My daughter was in shock as well. Thank God she spent a partial year in NY and has 8th grade graduation pictures and a yearbook to boot!!! Where is the closure?

Umm....I don't remember my 8th grade graduation and I was in NJ.

Let it go, imo.

I always found the idea of kids graduating, outside of high school or college, silly.

LoL.....oh I did let it go. It is way gone in fact. I have never lived in NJ but in NY the little kiddies even have a graduation and diploma. In fact, as you leave (in completion) every school bldg. there is a ceremony. I feel it is as much for the teachers as it is the students. The question was and still is......is this the norm for the west coast or Las Vegas in general?

I have found the process of these "graduations" from elementary school odd. It's like rewarding for mediocrity, (line from The Incredibles).

Juliet.....I feel the same way about giving a trophy for 2nd place; when in fact, 2nd place is just the 1st LOSER!!!!!

Graduation from middle school?? That seems awfully pretentious and unnecessary if you ask me.

I agree with the above two posters. Most schools here in the valley don't make a big deal of 8th grade graduation. And I've never heard of any kid getting a "diploma" for completing middle school here in town, lol.

That must be a NY thing

Way back, when I was a fresh faced novice middle school teacher here in NYC, I asked why such a big fuss was made over middle school graduation. The response:

"This may be the only graduation they get to attend."

(It was a not so good neighborhood.)

I think you are right Mom. I couldn't be happier.....no extra money spent on a dress for graduation. There will be a dance though and ICE SKATING. Tooooo funny. I love Las Vegas with all it's differences.
