WHat is the correct procedure for switching over from grass to the rock landscaping?

We are in the same situation. HOA is making us fix the front yard.

We were just going to take some dirt out.
Cover with plastic and then put rocks on top.

Somewhere on this thread it was mentioned that the HOA will not let you use plastic. Why would they care if you used plastic over fabric to cover dirt?

You have to find out what YOUR specific CC and R's say. HOA's vary widely from one to another with respect to rules about landscaping (and other issues).

You hit it, it's that easy. I had my lawn ripped up, the guys put weed barrier down over the existing dirt, planted the plants, rock-mulched over it and bang-o, I had a xeriscaped lawn. If you're not planting any plants and won't mind weeding yourself (who know what dormant seeds live in your dirt now), don't worry about weed barrier and you won't have to talk to your HOA. I have no idea why an HOA wouldn't allow it..it behoves them to, so the lawns don't end up looking like a free range hay field...

I put a cactus garden in my front lawn. Roughly 10 small cacti. Took a year of fighting with the HOA before they left me alone about it. Their concern was that I was going to let the cactus go wild and take over the yard -- I'm sure you've seen a few places that look like some sort of medieval gantlet.

Since the cactus fight, I've learned to simply call them and tell them what I want to do and ask for guidance on the best way to make that happen. I'm paying them their monthly fees, so they can bloody-well earn their keep and tell me how to keep them happy, while still accomplishing my goals. It's not like they're Nostradamus, after all.

Exactly. Some HOA's require you to draw up a landscaping plan and submit it to an architectural review board and then it gets approved.

Switching over from grass to xeriscape, if you are living in a HOA community, more than likely requires you to notify them in writing and then get an approval for changing the landscape of your front yard.

I had to do this a couple of months ago. I was a little pissed that I had to do all of this just to put in some plants and one tree. I purposely drew up a kindergarten level "landscape design". They e-mailed me a property template to use. I put some squiggly lines, odd shaped triangles and and weird looking squares explaining what I was going to do.

They approved my design plan. My plan of pissing them off back fired.

Just wait till they see my next design of installing grass, out door kitchen, patio, small garden and some palm trees. I have the real sketch plans from a professional landscaper already but I want to mess with them a little first.
