Our neighbors have left their dumpster on the side of street and its been attracting homeless people and dumpster divers to roam in it, in the middle of the night.
I haven't been able to get much sleep because whenever someone walks around and digs in it, the noise is very loud. This is a small residential neighborhood, and we live in a cul de sac. And im just wondering how in the world did these people even know to look in a small community for a dumpster?

I thought that usually the hot spots to find junk are behind malls or apartment complexes, not near single family homes in a middle class neighborhood.
This dumpster is such an eyeshore to look at and it's going on day 5 of them not moving it. The trash is filled all the way to the top and they won't get it dumped.

Yes, it is unreasonable. All home construction involving demo or even landscaping will have a dumpster. Rentals are usually by the week, so day 5 is nothing to be concerned about.

My concern is why the homeless are in your neighborhood? They are NOT there for the dumpster; the homeless are
already close by - very close - and the dumpster simply attracts them like a magnet.

It's not like they're traveling for miles to go dumpster digging.

There is undoubtedly a homeless camp somewhere very close to you. I'd focus on getting that moved.

Edit: I understand it's an eyesore and all the neighbors probably have a similar dislike for it. But the dumpster attracting homeless people is not the problem, it's a symptom. The underlying problem is that homeless are close by. If they're in the dumpster now, how long before they're scavenging in your backyard?

Don't they usually rent for a week? My neighbor just had one and it was there from Saturday to Saturday and I think that's what he told me.

When I rented a dumpster during a renovation in another state:

(a) there were hasps to accommodate a padlock to keep the bins closed and secure
(b) even though they were seven-day rentals, it was seven days *maximum* and you could call any time to schedule a pick-up before the week was up.

They recommended keeping the lids padlocked when not in use to keep neighbors and passersby from adding their own refuse and taking up all the space. Apparently that's a fairly common issue.
