Wondering from Las Vegasians (is that even right? lol) point of view, has the city's economy improved? Job market? Real estate?

Do you mean has Vegas recovered from the recession?

NO, if you mean a robust booming economy as in just before the recession. Otherwise, who knows what the level of recovery is. Still lots of folks unemployed, lots of empty houses/offices...so I'd vote that Vegas has still a long road ahead to some kind of positive growth/officially recovered status. Visitor numbers are up and that's what drives the machine, so we might be heading in the right direction, but it's gonna be a while before someone declares LV's economy is growing again.

Jobs

...not too many if you think you are highly qualified but not really are, for those high paying positions, whether in gaming-hospitality-tourism and any kind of private business.

You might/maybe will be able to get a low paying retail/service type full time/ part time or on call job with much persistence probably not in your field of expertise.. One of my kids just did, a high schooler, because of the persistence. 36 hours a week, $8.25 per hour no bennies. A fortune to a high school kid, but not enough and/or I will barely scrape by with those wages for an adult with all the bills that go with being one.

Real Estate

If you got the means, we got the ways...lots of foreclosures, lots to choose from, some new building going on. You got the money and a great credit history and are pre-approved by the keepers of the money...you can be like a kid in a candy shop.

It has improved and tourism is up finally. This was the first July 4th to sell out in the last 3 at least. But overall we are in much pain still.

Of course its better, just a lot of people won't ever accept any improvement until its back to levels of economic activity which may never return. Just talked with an old friend there who has owns two nail salons. She said the recession allowed her to get a sweetheart lease good for 5 years and the recession put her "amateur" competitors out on the street. Didn't matter much last year, but this year business has picked up and shes having a great year. She's a great barometer, something small usually paid for when a lady has cash in her pocket and isn't afraid to spend it. Easily could be skipped if finances were tight, but she says ladies are spending more per visit too and she is seeing some old customers come back saying they finally got jobs. Say what you want about the vanity trade, but when it picks up it bodes well for the larger economy.

If occupancy is an indicator, our Signature unit has not been below 27 days rented for the past three months. A year ago it averaged 16 to 17.

I posted this on another blog, however I think it' should answer your question.
Just like the analysts even the business executives can't agree on the Las Vegas recovery. All this says is that each executive is that they are forecasting according to what is happening to their business. Unfortunately these forecast are good news, bad news and uncertainty.

Local business execs turn more gloomy on economic recovery

I don't know where some people get their facts. Convention attendance is down. Casino revenues are down. On the bright side, there are jobs aplenty... in North Dakota.
