Agreed. I'm LOVING the normal lack of humidity here. I'll take 100 & no humidity over 90& humid any day. The thunderstorms have been pretty cool, but the higher humidity sucked. I live a mile or 2 from the resort & today was just telling a friend back in chicago how much I love it here.

I can say that we lived near Green Valley Station and we hardly knew we were in Las Vegas because it is nicer/cheaper away from the strip and you reaqlize that everyone is just living thier lives like any other city. Friends used to ask us aren't you excited every time your driving around cause your in Vegas, no because we are just going to work, playing with our kids in the parks and eating at home just like Ohio. It was just as nice to drive on good roads, see the mountains and the sunset/rise over them, see the palm trees and enjoy the parks until dark with no blood sucking mosquitos and other bugs bothering you.We really only went to the strip when friends came to town, or the kids wanted to go do something different and there are plenty of things to do free/cheap on and around the strip...

Having just moved here from Minnesota 3 weeks ago, and thankful to be leaving Minnesota July heat and humidity (though missing the greenery a bit), I am enjoying the thundershowers... I guess I haven't acclimated yet, because this isn't really close to midwestern humidity, at least not to me -- I only say this because I am not perpetually damp after 5 minutes outside, which would be the case if I were in MN right now.

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE that sagebrushy smell everytime I step out the door. Heavenly!

I was really interested to see how Vegas was off the strip, considering I've vacationed in Vegas no less than 6 times and never really explored other parts of the city.

We stayed at the Green Valley Ranch in Henderson. Absolutely loved the place. Family friendly while still having some areas for adults and younger people. If it was up to me, I'd choose to never stay on the strip again. My girlfriend enjoys staying where the action is, but the value of off strip resorts are endless.

- Free bottled water everywhere
- Free valet parking
- Amazingly cheap buffets (that are actually a value)
- AMAZING spa.
- Nice rooms
- Great pools (they actually had 4-5 pools)
- Workout room complimentary with stay
- Reasonable prices for drinks and food by the pool
- Excellent service

I do realize that they have a resort fee of I believe $25/day, but overall, I was pleasantly surprised. I also realize that there are nice hotels on the strip, but I always feel like I'm getting nickel and dimed at those places.

As for Vegas itself, it was beautiful. Love the mountains and scenery, but I would like to retract my notion of desert "dry" heat not being as bad as humid heat we have back home in Kansas City.

115 degrees is still 115 degrees!

Wow. It was like an oven. Not intolerable, but hot. But hey, it's the summertime in the desert. I just kept thinking to myself how I'd deal with the heat for almost half the year.

Some other observations:

- Love the Spanish styled architecture of the SW and Vegas
- Tons of food options! Love In and Out, and the abundance of Asian cuisine ranging from Viet, Korean, Chinese food was spectacular on Spring Mountain!
- Roads look meticulously maintained, (probably because of lack of freezing temps contracting the concrete and no snow)
- You get a lot of house for the money
- Areas like Henderson look like a great place to raise kids

- VEGAS IS MORE THAN JUST THE STRIP.

The one thing that did concern me were the lack of tenants in some newer shopping centers. We all understand the current economic downturn, so it wasn't a surprise, but it looks like the from the eye test that KC is weathering the downturn a little better.

ON A SIDE NOTE*
If you're from the Midwest or other parts of the country, and are not used to the desert, it will be an adjustment. You HAVE to stay hydrated. Don't take the desert heat or setting for granted, you only need to drive 30 min. away to the Hoover dam to realize that Vegas was indeed built in the middle of the desert.

Anyways, hope I wasn't too critical of Vegas. It was a great place to visit and someplace I have not crossed off my list to reside in someday.
$25/day who pays that

My wife and I visit Las vegas twice a year from England. We love to get on a bus and
go for a look around far from the strip. A couple of years ago we rode a bus down
Boulder Highway, spotted a little locals casino called Longhorn. We had a great time in
there - full of local colour!! Last year we took a ride down Tropicana Ave about five
miles down past Hooters. We got off for a look around, decided after a few minutes
we should'nt really be there - it was a bit iffy. Still, it was interesting........

$25. a day resort fee makes me SO appreciative that I own a home here. I, personally, believe resort fees are a joke and quite the slap to the paying customer. I think it is used as a lure in some places where they brag they will waive the resort fee. I just don't get the whole thing.

Glad you got to get away from the Strip and see the "real" LV! Much of your post reminds me of the way I felt the first time I got off the Strip. After that, I KNEW we would live here one day!

$25 resort fee MAY be unreasonable, but not unusual....that kind of fee is in place in MANY hotels.
$25 is Standard For GVR & Red Rock (both STations)

Haha, that's around the area I live. Right near the Gun Store. To be honest, it felt more iffy where I came from back in Worcester MA. I just see lots of zombies wandering around baking in the sun here.

as for the heat, my outside reader of my truck showed 122F one day, being parked in front of a building in the afternoon hours.
