The frozen Marie Callender meals and pies are in name only and bear no resemblance to the food at the restaurant. They are made by Con Agra foods, which is the same company that makes the horrible Banquet frozen meals.

That particular location didn't deserve to stay in business in my opinion.

Wow!! those places have been here my whole life. You really never think of Marie Calenders as being a Vegas tradition but I grew up going there and enjoyed their pies.

Yeah their frozen dinners are off the hook too. I've eaten that lasagne many times when I was a single. They make the best Frozen dinners. Them and claim Jumpers.

Its sad to see Marie Callenders close.
I grew eating on Sundays there and loved having their quiche. Mimi's is good, but not the same as MC was in its prime.
Its just like when Mervyns closed. All the good things are closing. Whats going to be left after all this is done?

We had a Marie Callender's here in El Paso once. It was right next door to a hospital who ordered pies by the dozens, the restaurant was very profitable. One day a hospital unit ordered a pie that happened to have a latex glove baked into the pie. One nurse with latex allergies nearly died after eating a piece of pie. The Marie Callender's shut down soon after. Now all we have are Village Inn pies, just not the same.

Default Yes, Virginia, there really was a Marie Callender.

We still have ─ what? ─ three or four Marie Callender's? Many people are unaware of the small one on Rainbow near Cheyenne. That's usually where we get our pies when they go on sale. Then we stock up and freeze a few. Can't freeze the cream pies though, only the fruit ones. If I remember correctly, the first restaurant opened on Sahara and 6th St. in about 1970. Tony Roma's opened later, but I think it had a different name. MC's in those days was mostly mile high ham sammies, chili con carne, tureens of soup, really good corn pone, and, of course, pies. That location started out as a very small place, and it expanded over the years. I'm pretty sure the Eastern location was the second one.

The frozen food in grocery stores came years later. I've never tried any of it. Why would I when they make it all fresh daily at the restaurants ─ especially the pies, which are made from scratch every day. My wife worked at one in Houston during her school years, and at night she got free pies. If one has been cut into they don't keep it, so she said she always made sure she cut into one she wanted near closing time.

I understand from my sister that the boxed cornbread mix is like what they serve in the restaurants. I can't remember ever making it at home. Even if i could, I couldn't duplicate the honey butter.
