Will be there for a week just need to be guided in the right direction. Don't want to get stuck somewhere I really should have avoided whether for money reasons or just plain unsafe. Las Vegas natives......let's hear it!

You need to tell us where you will be staying, what you like to do, will you have a car, are you an outdoors person or indoor, do you want to see shows, gamble, hike, swim, drink, dance, see Hoover Dam, spectacular desert scenery, ...what? There is so much to do you won't be bored. My suggestion is to make your first trip a reconnaissance trip, and just enjoy whatever is in front of you. I'm not sure what the Las Vegas tour busses are like since, obviously, I've never been on one. But in other cities when we travel we enjoy taking at least one day and doing a guided tour. The guides are always full of information for other things to do. I really wish we had the hop on hop off trolleys here.

Well, when family comes to town, we obviously take them to the strip and visit a number of properties. They tend to like to do this several times. I also like to get people to the Hoover Dam, and maybe a nice hike at Mount Charleston. Probably one evening on Fremont street, and maybe a Cirque show. ...and there goes the week.

+1 to Buzz's point about making your first trip a reconnaissance trip. Unless your interests are extremely narrow, there's just too much to do when you realize how much awesome outdoors stuff is nearby...

Something I always take people too that many tourist seem to miss, is the conservatory at the bellagio. It's free.

I 'd go up the eiffel tower and watch the water show at the Bellagio at night as well.

And, of course, there's the rite of passage of walking on The Strip and getting past the porn snappers without taking a card. Everyone visiting LV should have to do it once in their lives. Just start your stroll around Denny's, and head north on LV Blvd. You don't have to look for them...they'll find you.

I second the recommendation for the Fremont Street Experience. It's a fun time, you get a glimpse of "old Vegas", and it's generally inexpensive compared to the strip.

most of the locals have it figured out. even the tourists. from one of the good companies (not nellis, ace, star, union, western, definitely not desert, lucky, or anlv), when you get a good driver you get his name, work hours, cell. it's called a personal. call in advance and make appointments. s/he'll section away the time to take care of you because it's in their best interest to do so. the most successful / re: best drivers have many personals in their cell. they will even pick you up from the airport - what? not have to stand in that stupid disneyland a ride maze and play rip off ride through the tunnel taxi roulette? yes. they will tell you where to stand (at the crosswalk), tell you to call when you land, and they'll signal the brown shirts as they drive up past the long line of cabs that they are picking up a personal - drive up and pick you up. simple. easy. effective.
