Looking for advice.

My wife and I currently live near Green Bay WI. She makes around 90K a year as a senior buyer for a walmart type competitor here in WI. I just graduated with a teaching degree in Phy Ed.

I have just been offered a job in Henderson to teach Phy ed. My parents and sister both live in Henderson and we would love to make the move as well. (have you ever been in a GB winter? Death is almost a better option.)

My dilemma is, how do I get my wife a job in the struggling Vegas economy making between 50-60K? That would put us combined at around what we are making now. Im planning on filling out online apps using my parents address and phone number to try to elicit some callbacks and see if that goes anywhere.

Does anyone know of any corporate recruiters in the Las Vegas area? DO they exist out there? Any other advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Retail is very big in Las Vegas. The Fashion Show Mall alone is one of the most profitable per sq ft of any in the country, and ranks second in this poll: Rankopedia: Best American Mall.

Fashion Show Mall - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

And within walking distance of the Fashion Show there is probably more retail shopping than the whole state of Wisconsin with the big centers within the casinos, such as the Miracle Mile in the Hard Rock, and the Forum Shops in Caesars Palace. And that's only the Strip. Las Vegas has nearly 2 million population, and gets nearly 40 million visitors a year.

I think she'd find a job. As far as head hunters, I know they are here, and know people who have used them, but it's been a while. The best way to find a job is still the old fashioned way ...by making the rounds in person. The internet is a waste of time in most cases even though saying that I know I'll hear about exceptions.

There are tons of people wondering the same thing. Your wife may have to settle for less, maybe not. Just depends on how bad she wants a job making that amount.

But honestly if anyone really knew of a qualifying job making that much, there would probably be family and/or friends that they would help first....then maybe soneone on a forum.

Earlier this year there were two government job openings(Nellis AFB) that I knew about before they got nationally posted. One was paying 40k+, the other 55k+. Our chief/superintendent asked everyone if we knew any people that would possibly be interested in the open position before they had to go through the process of posting the position world wide. I immediately called my brother-in-law and a close friend. My brother-in-law had just got hired at City Center and wasnt interested but my friend jumped at the chance immeditely. He ended up getting the job and thanks me every chance he gets.

I could have easily posted those jobs on Facebook, City-data, etc...But had to take care of home first.

Just saying.

Goodluck and congrats on the job in Henderson.

loudo, your wife is making around $90,000 a year. And you want her to give that up so you can take a job which probably pays considerably less just to live here? If I were making what your wife makes, I don't care how bitterly cold the winter's were, I would keep the job, which means staying put. Really good paying jobs are very hard to find these days, so if you or your family has them, I say keep them.
Or, you could just all move out here, not knowing if your wife can get work even remotely paying anywhere near what she was making...and if you end up being laid off, since that seems to be normal for the school system out here, then you both end up with nothing and she could not go back to her job, because some other lucky person will have it as soon as she gives it up.
Think it through first to make sure it's really worth it. If you do decide to take the job, and if it doesn't work out, please don't be one of the disgruntled few that come in here and bash the city, the residents, the pets, the air, the wind, etc because it didn't work out.
Good luck either way.

I agree -- your wife isn't going to find a 90K job. She can work her way up the ladder into a 90K job. But it will take awhile in this economy. Perhaps five years, assuming she's one of the best in her field.

Then again, you two really don't NEED a 90K job to live here. You can do fine on a single teacher's income. Things are cheap here.

My wife and I do quite well on a teacher's and cook's salary. (Her income is double mine.) Our house is paid-for, utilities are negligible, food is one quarter the price it was back in Florida. Taxes are 1/5th what they were in Florida. Insurance is 1/20th what it was in Florida.

We're currently trying to figure out what to do with our savings, because bank interest rates are basically 0%. We may just buy another house -- and pay cash -- and use that for an additional income stream. My projections are that if things remain the way they are for two years, we'll be able to buy three or four additional properties, without borrowing a penny.

On a teacher's and cook's salary, mind you.

Ditto.

A close friend of mine gave up a good 90K a year job in Denver as a property manager of a downtown highrise because she didn't like her new boss - I pleaded with her not to do it, but she was stubborn. She became a realtor and sold two houses in 18 months. Now she sells shoes p/t and is an aerobics instructor p/t - no benefits. She's beating herself up enough I don't have to say "I told you so".

If I were in your shoes, I'd try to get a teaching job in Green Bay and bank as much as you can with the aim of moving to Las Vegas in the future. Have your wife continue to network for a job there and if/when she is hired - you will be ready to go with enough money to buy a house. In the interim, buy some heavy parkas and gloves at Eddie Bauer.

Good luck,
Croce

Retail and fashion are big here in the valley but the economy here stinks and $90K is going to be hard to come by. Even $60K would be hard. BTW you will like it here. No Packer winters here! No Packers either! I love em though...

Let me get this straight... Your wife makes 90k and you want to move here...? That's one of the stupidest posts i've seen in months.

Oh, c'mon. He's hoping she'll be able to make 50-60k here, which plus his job, would equal about the same as they're making in Green Bay. Even if she can only find something for 30-40k, it could very well be worth it to them for climate/lifestyle reasons. The risk, of course, is that she doesn't find anything here that she's willing to do for quite some time, which is a risk they'll have to fully evaluate, obviously.
