because they like the sound of their voice.

We are NOT a top end hotel....only 3.5 stars and we only have one clerk that took a $20 for a suite....

UNFORTUNATELY for her....she unblocked a suite that I had personally blocked for an EXTREMELY Big Player....$$$wise not tonnage.....

That was 3 years ago....and she now only speaks to me if she wants permission to sell a suite at the desk

I made her PERSONALLY go up to the Suite and inform the person she had upgraded that the bell desk was on the way up to mive him and here was his 20 back.

NOW....that being said, had she UPGRADED the gentleman at the correct price, she would have earned a $20 commission. But Greed set in.....

Wow, if you sent a desk person up to my room and said I would have to be moved after you already gave me an upgrade, I'd probably never come back!

Years ago, during a visit to Lake Tahoe hotel/casino, I asked the clerk if $20 would get me a better room or was it just me watching too much tv or whatever to think that. I thought I might embarrass myself but what the heck and decided to give it a try. He significantly upgraded us to a beautiful lake view room on one the upper floors. the view was to die for and I'll never forget that trip. I actually kind of felt I didnt tip enough for the room/view that we ended up in.

That's kind of odd some of you say this never works.

Because when I went to vegas a couple years ago, there was a whole group of us staying at the Bellagio. We had called ahead and talked to the group sales people (i think there were 15 or 18 rooms that we got from tuesday to sunday - there was 32 of us, i think, and there were a couple of people who just came by themselves, most were couples - so it was around 15 - 18 rooms) and got the following prices:

I forget the actual prices, but it was something like this:

100 a night for non-fountain view per night
150 for fountain view per night
200 for a suite per night. (i think it was 200. or maybe 180 or something. I know it was more than 150.)

Every single person in our group tried the 20 dollar trick. Actually we all used 50's because we were staying more than fri/sat/sun. I think that site is geared to the people staying a day or 2 or 3 maybe. We were staying 5 or 6 (some people stayed an extra day, I think, I just did tues-sun).

We all got upgrades to the next level from what we paid for. For instance, I had paid for non-fountainview, and got fountainview on the 18th floor, right in the center.

Everyone who paid for non-fountainview got upgraded to fountainveiw, and the 2 or 3 who paid for fountainview, got upgraded to corner suites.

Note that there is a post in another thread about the "hosts" at Pure making $400,000 a year and more.

But the $20 upgrade tip probably works better in Podunk.
Oh, I know they probably don't make big salaries. For instance, how much would a desk clerk/check in clerk/whatever, make at the Bellagio in salary only? 20 grand? 15?

Just the lowest rung guy, not the supervisor or whatever.

I'm not saying it never works, because clearly it does...a lot of times too.
However, I wouldn't plan on it working every time.
Had my $20 in between my CC and ID. I was checking in early. I asked for a complimentary upgrade from a young female. She said that MGM was nearly sold out so she had no upgrades. That was it. SHE ENDED UP KEEPING THE $20!!!!

Never been a problem for me. We usually try to find the cheapest room we can. I'm not planning on inviting friends over to see how well we live. On vacation I'm not going to spend any time in the room, except to sleep and store my bags. As long as it's clean, and has a decent bathroom, and comfortable bed... I know, I know... No class.

Which comedian did a skit about (at the insistence of his girlfriend) paying hundreds extra for a hotel room with a view in Hawaii. They get to the room, put down their bags.

"OK, let's go!"

"Oh no! We're going to sit down, and look at this view. We're not going anywhere."
