If you are working front desk at a strip hotel you aren't doing too bad. When I left the Venetian (2005) RSV agents were making $14 something an hour & front desk made more.

At least try asking nicely for an upgrade/nicer view before handing over cash.

I know first hand that a $20 will do wonders in this town (Hell, $5 will usually do the trick for everyday things (quick seating at a restaurant, etc))..... but its all in the approach. You have to realize that the $20 isn't paying for anything. Whatever you're after, its for free. The cash is only a "thank you" for the assistance.

I see people all the time flash the tip at the attendant like the attendant is a dolphin at sea world, doing tricks for a fish. It only makes you look like a fool.

Vegas runs on tips. The wages are ridiculously low for service employees, so the casino's make tipping almost mandatory. If you do it correctly, both you and the employee walk away with a smile on your face.

Here's a $20 trick that almost always works. Put $20 in a slot machine and watch it vanish.

All I know is it worked for me when I tried it. Maybe the desk clerk felt charitable - I don't know.

I had booked a suite at Mandalay Bay but it was one of the entry level ones (on a low floor with a view of the back parking lot). I gave the desk clerk a 20 when I checked in and asked her to please see if there was something she could do. As I started to unpack in the room the phone rang - it was the same desk clerk. She said one of the suites in The Hotel they reserve for comping high rollers was available and I could have it (no additional charge). It was an incredible experience - just like in the movies. The HUGE suite was up high, had a view right down the strip, and had floor to ceiling windows, plasma TVs in the bathrooms, a jacuzzi - the whole nine. And, the staff delivered canapes/hors d'oeuvres to my door each night - without even asking if I wanted them. The desk clerk said I may only get to stay there for a day or two, but I ended up staying for a week. I gave her another 20 before I left.

So - maybe the 20 dollar trick is bogus, maybe not. Or, perhaps it depends on the customer and the desk clerk involved. All I can report is I tried it and it worked. I have not tried it again (now that I have a place of my own on the Strip there's no need).

Bill

We are NOT a top end hotel....only 3.5 stars and we only have one clerk that took a $20 for a suite....

UNFORTUNATELY for her....she unblocked a suite that I had personally blocked for an EXTREMELY Big Player....$$$wise not tonnage.....

That was 3 years ago....and she now only speaks to me if she wants permission to sell a suite at the desk

I made her PERSONALLY go up to the Suite and inform the person she had upgraded that the bell desk was on the way up to mive him and here was his 20 back.

NOW....that being said, had she UPGRADED the gentleman at the correct price, she would have earned a $20 commission. But Greed set in.....
What hotel do you work at?

Uh no.

You need to go listen to all those people at FHBM podcasts and see that they were not laughed at. In fact, they were accommodated for their $20 tip. Why would they lie since they are trying to share travel tips by sharing their experience? $20 for literally 10-15 seconds of work is nothing to sneeze at. Heck, I'm well off and I'd take it if it simply meant clicking a button to see if a better room is available. Heck, I'd do it for free! Why such the hostility toward the $20 trick? People have some weird sense of self worth to be insulted by free money.

I wonder what an upgrade would be there? Let's see....mirrors on the ceiling?

My daughter got an "upgrade" at the IP...she said it was something out of the 70s...lol
