Not the one you encounter on the streetcorner.

This is where you tip the check in clerk at your hotel in vegas (or other places around the country, evidently, but it sort of got famous from vegas) for a room upgrade...

You can find more about it here....

Las Vegas - The Twenty Dollar Trick

Anyway, my question is, does the desk clerk keep that money? Or do they have to pool it or give it to the casino? Because if they keep that money, and do 5 a day, that's 500 a week, 26 grand in tips a year.

Anyone know who keeps that money?

The other answer is that most people dealing with the public in a resort like Las Vegas will get tips. $500 a week is peanuts for many of them. $500 a night is probably more like it for most good locations. Even more. Remember, they don't make very good salaries for the simple reason they make big tips. Note that there is a post in another thread about the "hosts" at Pure making $400,000 a year and more.

But the $20 upgrade tip probably works better in Podunk.

Agreed -- total myth. You'll have better luck with "It's our honeymoon/our first time in Vegas/my new wife just found out she's pregnant/someone mugged me on the way in."

Not MUCH better luck, mind you.

When its your bday and you show your id you can also state that its you birthday and if its possible to get a upgrade. I always get one. also be nice and after your stay visit the person who gave it to you and give them a bottle of wine and a note card to thank you, If you plan on going back remind them about hat gift and Im positive you will always get a upgrade with that person again with out the asking.

Our policy is simple....

#1 You can call and BOOK an updraded suite for $75 on a weekend and $50 S-T
#2 You can ask at the Desk upon CkIN about complimentary upgrade and MAY be offered one. IF you're staying one night.....and you MAY be offere one for $50 a nite but only if you stay 2 or more nites....EVERYthing depends upon wether or not we NEED the business....

EVERYTHING that happens depends upon wether or not we NEED the business

20 bucks wont get you anywhere in some circles.
About a month ago I handed a guy back his 20 and said "Sorry...I can't help you"
Fact is I could have helped, but not for 20.
An hour or so later I did the exact thing he asked for another patron for 50.

If it's such a scam, then why do people keep calling in to "Five Hundy By Midnight" almost every week and say the $20 trick worked for them... including nice upgrades at places like The Cosmopolitan?
