Yes, I know, we are outliers - we are not the typical retirees - but we are not alone. Many of our friends from high-cost areas (Manhattan, Rancho Santa Fe, Atherton, Palo Alto, etc) are in the process of retiring and looking in Las Vegas for retirement homes -- all of whom want larger (>6,000sf) homes.
Why? Because you can? Pretty silly reasoning to think you find happiness just because you can buy a much bigger house for retirement. Then again I guess all those millions before you who just downsized for retirement were the real fools.

Laughing in the face of love
What on Earth you try'na do?
It's up to you

Gonna knock you off your feet
Better recognise your brothers
Everyone you meet

Why in the world are we here?
Surely not to live in pain and fear
Why on Earth are you there
When you're everywhere
Gonna get your share

Like the moon and the stars and the sun
Yeah, we all shine on
On and on and on, on and on

Like the moon and the stars and the sun
